Default Diabetic sugar substitute

I have many recipes for homemade dog treats which contain honey - is it safe to substitute Stevia?

I've never heard of Stevia but from a quick google search it would seem that it is not.

I would not use any artificial sweeteners of any kind! Some (if not all) are dangerous to dogs. I left you a link in my answer to your cranberry question--See the last link I gave you---Will tell you about the sugar sub called Xylitol!

Can you just eliminate the sugar in your recipes completely? How much sugar is in the recipe(s)--maybe it is not enough to make a big difference--Figure how much sugar in each treat given and don't give many treats in one day? If I remember right--there are 4 grams of carbohydrates (sugar) in 1 teaspoon. You could add cinnamon for flavor also. (bananas or crushed apple) Note that I am a diabetic and if I can help with figuring your recipes--let me know. You know--I wonder if there are any recipe books for treats for diabetic dogs out there. You could check on the 'net' or request books from your library.
You can also check out this link in this forum--May be some ideas here:

Homemade Treats Some suggestions are post numbers: 29,32,47,48,49,53,54,55,60,67,69 and 103
And here is a recipe to make oat flour (better for diabetics then regular flour---less carbs and more fiber?
Oat Flour Recipe:
1) Simply take some whole oats (rolled or quick variety) and put them into a blender or food processor. A coffee bean grinder works remarkably well, also.
2) Grind until a floury consistency is reached.
3) That is all there is to making your own oat flour.
4) Store in airtight container such as a jar.
5) Label the jar with the grinding date.

I just put these words in my browser: recipes diabetic dog treats --and it brought up a lot of sites to check out. I don't have time right now to research them BUT you can!

Thank you for that, am starting a dog bakery mainly geared towards natural treats and especially those safe for diabetic doggies - my dog was diagnosed a couple of months ago!

Cool FionaLeigh!

I just added a new recipe to the recipes thread in here from a newsletter I receive and noted this link about starting a dog bakery---I thought you might find it interesting: Dog Bakery Business – How to Start and Run a Successful Business
