retail diabetic dog food
Hi,
My toy poodle, Courage, was just diagnosed with diabetes. His blood sugar was 540. He was put on 1 unit of Humulin N twice a day. He has lost two pounds and now weighs in at a whopping 7 pounds! We have no problems with the shots twice a day, however....he does not like the food they recommended at all (Science Diet w/d)! It does look and smell pretty bland to me too! Is there a food on the market that works well for diabetic dogs.
I have read a lot about making his food but frankly, I don't want to. Like everyone else I work full time and take care of the hubby, kids and other dog! I am hoping that there is a natural type of high protein dog food available on the shelves out there.
Please let me know if anyone out there has had positive results with a commercial dog food for their diabetic dog.
I will make it if i have too. But I would prefer the easy way!

Actually Hills w/d is the best for this purpose. One one mine some years ago was also diabetic and it took him a while to accept the food but when a dog is hungry enough, they will eat it.

diabetic dog food
Hi, I know that he will eventually eat. I have never been one to cater to my dogs preffered foods, however, is it not important that he eat when he gets his insulin? That is the only reason I am concerned. Would his sugar drop too low if he does not eat?

yes, it would be best if he is eating while on insulin. Are you giving him canned or dry? With mine, I gave him a small mix of dry and wet mixed.

My poodle was diagnosed about two months ago and even her vet told me w/d is rarely tolerated. I tried Wellness Core and she loves it. I do put a little concoction on it (canned chicken like the tuna, just drain it and it has no sugar on it). I actually doctor that up even more but I'm not sure that's necessary. Putting it on w/d might even get your dog to eat it. If your dog is on one unit a day (just like mine is) it's highly possible that in the near future insulin won't be needed. My vet informed me today that's what he expects at my dog's next curve. The shots might be ok for you (horrifying for me) but the cost not to mention putting a chemical in her would make me very happy.

Courage
Fiona,
Love the name! Thanks so much for the positive post. I just spent all day at the vet doing a blood glucose curve! at 9:15 it was 178, 11:00- 247, 2:00-116 and finally at 5:00 - 134. It has only been a week since his diagnosis but I am really hoping he can come off insulin in 3 months or so. If not, I am no stranger to giving shots! I will give the Wellness Gold a shot. Right now he is on Merrick low glycermic dog food. I have never researched so much about dog food or diabetic supplies in my whole life! He is doing so much better in this short time. He plays, runs and jumps on the bed! I appreciate the replies to my desperate posts.

I am happy to help you in any way I can! This has actually inspired me to start my own dog bakery which caters to diabetics. I can't tell you where I parked my car half the time but I am UP on my diabetes research! I decided to do it because many people have families, full-time jobs, etc., and they don't have the time to devote to special needs dogs even if they wish they did. I wish you the best of luck and it's highly possible that if you monitor the diet insulin won't be necessary. The curve sounds very good!

which one!!??
Hi Fiona,
Wow, there are a lot of different types of Wellness Core. What type are you feeding your little "sugar baby"? Thats what my husband now calls Courage!!
He is doing so much better in the past two weeks on insulin.

Wellness
I am giving her the original Wellness Core, not the weight reduction or ocean formula and she absolutely loves it! Glad to hear your dog is doing well.
I am more than happy to help you in any way possible and it sounds like you're doing great - I will send you my sugar free goulash recipe once this site lets me post an e-mail address and I guarantee your dog will eat every time! I hope that everything stays well for you and for Courage!
