Default Bloat and lifelong agony

Have any of you had the traumatic experience of seeing your beloved dog suddenly die through bloat ? Here is my story :-

Kas my adorable big GS died suddenly at 1.30 am on Saturday 22 August 2010. He was perfectly normal all day Friday, ate his evening meal OK and was just himself until about 9.30 pm. Then he started being sick - vomiting, which got very violent and he vomited many times, bringing up yellow matter in a jelly. It would not come away easily and I had to pull it out at times.

Having settled down by 12.30 in the kitchen, I checked him 3 times and he seemed to be asleep for the night. I heard two coughs at 1.30 am, went to see him and he was dead. A large pool of dark blood had come out of his rear end. I assume he had ruptured something vital with all that heavy reaching.

The vet said it was most likely gas causing a twisted gut - a condition that comes on quickly without warning and is fatal within 3 hours.

He was in his prime at 6 years 4 months and formed a big part of our everyday life. He was our only family.

We knew all about being careful after eating and took all the precautions stated by experts, but still my beauty died.

We fed him on dry food - kibble and I will always feel guilty that if we had mixed some canned food with the kibble, he would never have died.

Your comments on this dreadful problem with larger dogs will be much appreciated.

I am not allowed to place his photo here, so go to "All Dog Pictures" and look for KAS.

I am sorry to hear of your loss. After 52 years of raising dogs and the number I have lost over those years I can understand.

I tried to do an upload, which I have done many times on other Forums, but the upload failed - it is a JPEG image and should have gone OK.

Sounds too much trouble here, so see my KAS as specified in my post under pictures.

When I have accomplished the magic 50 posts, perhaps I will be able to show my beautiful dog that died so suddenly and left me heartbroken.

We appear to still be having problems with the uploading of pics from the manage attachment section. admin has been informed and is working on it.

Hi everyone,
About a year and a half ago, I had to say goodbye to my beautiful 13 year old chow chow because he had developed bloat in just a matter of hours. :'( It still breaks my heart everyday because I don't know what caused it. I also had never even heard about bloat until that night. I decided to make a facebook page to help create awareness about this disease and for people to share their stories.

If you have facebook and are want to share your story with other pet owners, go on facebook and search:

Canine Bloat (GDV) Remembering and Creating Awareness.

I hope all of our dogs are having a great time on rainbow bridge.
