Unhappy Diabetic Pitbull ( help )

My pitbull was diagnosed diabetic . We left her at vet for 4 days and she wouldnt eat for them . So we brought her home cause i knew she would eat for me . But she will not eat the w/d recommended . I am feeding her r/d with 2 ounces of chicken she is eating but I have no clue what a good reading is . I have been from 357 to today at 162. I am lost and have no answers . Isnt there another food for diabetic dogs that they will actually eat ???? I have searched every dog food there is . What is the greatest % of all ingredients needed to be diabetic food . fat, protein, carbs, fiber ???? how much of each is needed ?

I suggest you put this in your browser: home cooking for diabetic dog. I did not go into any of the sites that came up but there are many and I think you will get some ideas from them. I have diabetes myself and know this is a hard question to answer as a lot depends on the individual as to how much carbs, etc is the right amount--depends on how much insulin is used also. Then again it is also hard to compare these things from a dog to a human! I feed raw and home cook for my 2 dogs. They do not have diabetes but I know I don't agree with the dog food for diabetes---Most dog food is full of grains, esp. corn and these are all carbohydrates! I am afraid a vet is not going to know much about a diet for diabetes--They just 'prescribe' what is on the market in already made dog food for diabetes. My daughter had a dog with diabetes and I couldn't believe what the 1st ingredient was listed on the diabetic dog food--CORN!!!

The ideal thing would be to have a holistic vet that believes in home cooking (Or raw) and had some schooling on nutrition for dogs! You might try to find one.

I hope you find some answers in the sites above I mentioned. Please keep us posted on how things are going! If you find some good answers--might be helpful feedback for other people in the same situation. And some of the sites you will be checking out I know have feedback from others that are in your situation. Good luck!

How are things going with your dog? I was just checking some things (not even about diabetes!) on the web and by chance I came across this site and thought of you instantly. Hoping there is some info for you here that you can use. It is a blog--Make sure to scroll the whole page as it can look like the end when it is not and note too that at bottom of page--to the right--there is a link to click on for more older posts.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a frustrating and often difficult condition to gain the upper hand on, especially for pet owners who has just received the diagnosis. Cushing's disease and pancreatitis are two concurrent conditions that are common in dogs with DM, which can complicate things. There are support groups out there that can guide you through every aspect of the disease. Check out Diabetes in your Dog - Insulin, Food, Monitoring, Testing - Forum I think you'll find a lot of experienced folks there who are ready, willing and very able to help you.
