1 Yr Old JRT Grand Mal Seizure
Hello,
Last week I learned of a "beagle jack russell terrier mix" that was going to be dropped off at the pound if the owner couldn't find a new home for her. Being the way I am, I could NOT sit back and let another dog get dropped off to be euthanized.
I asked around and nobody that I knew could take her or wanted to take a dog at this time so I looked at my boyfriend and he gave me the go ahead to bring her home.
I went to the guy's house that had her and he was more than happy to dump her off on me despite his young daughter crying her eyes out..... He told me a completely different story than I had been told originally. (I was told she was up to date with shots, fixed and ready to go, and was told when I got there that she was NOT fixed, NOT up to date with shots and was a full blood JRT) I felt like I had been led on just so he could get rid of her, but I knew in my heart that I would rather take her than let her become yet another pound puppy.
Well... After 2 nights of easy sleeping our 3rd night together has become much of a nightmare. I was awoken by Tela kicking me and then she began screaming and convulsing. Soon we realized she had peed herself and had begun to poo herself. She foamed at the mouth, her entire body curled up, and her mouth was moving very strangely. It lasted about two minutes and when it was over she could not stand. We put her in her kennel because we had no idea what was happening. She came to very quickly, within about 5 to 10 minutes. By then I had begun to cry and was on the phone with my mom because this is MY first dog (my mom has 4 beagles and I had been raised with dogs my whole life and never experienced this).
My question is, she has been subjected to a LOT of new things. Being a JRT I know she needs a lot of exercise so we taught her to swim in our pool with us. She seemed to be okay with it so I don't know if that could cause it? She also has access to a fully fenced back yard where as before she was living in an apartment and could only go potty on a 5' x 15' patch of grass in front of the apartment. She has been eating weeds and grass like crazy and will not stop when I yell at her (not a very good listener as she spent most of her life so far locked up in a kennel). She has been playing along the back fence that is overgrown with trees and weeds for privacy.
I have a garden and she has preferred to use the bathroom in it.....
I have red mulch in the garden but I don't believe it is anything hazardous, she doesn't eat that either.
We have a pile of composted grass in the back yard as well, but I have only seen her walk on it.
My boyfriend does not want to deal with a dog and honestly we cannot afford the vet bills to have her on special meds and to have a million tests run on her. I don't know what to do, it's 5 am and I've been researching all over the internet since it happened.
I am terrified to sleep. I am terrified to let her sleep. Do grand mal seizures happen one after another? Why at night? I am so confused.

I think you have probably hit on the reason why she was rehomed in the first place. There are several reasons why a dog has seizures - epilepsy and brain damage are the first that come to mind - but I don't know if there is anything that can be done to help without veterinary treatment.
If the cost of a vet visit is out of the question I don't know what to suggest but please don't feel you are in any way to blame for what is happening to her. I guess stress could make the situation worse but it sounds like she is having a better life with you than she has had in the past and I am sure that nothing you have done is causing the problem.

I have a phone call placed to the girl that brought the dog to my attention so she can ask her friends mom (who dates this man who gave the dog up). I am going to be very upset if this man has withheld medical records and paperwork from me because of this. I told my boyfriend (who is very upset with the whole situation) that is isn't HER fault. She didn't have a seizure because she wanted to.
I am praying that this is a one time deal. In the mean time I am trying my best to get the truth out of all of these people because she's here now, they have no reason to lie to me anymore.
Her previous owner fed her Ol' Roy, which my mom was extremely upset with. I have been trying to switch her to "Simply Nutrition" which is comparable to Blue Buffalo. She's an extremely finicky eater but likes to sneak a few bites of my cats food (blue buffalo) but I have been trying to keep that at a minimum.
Before bed last night I noticed she had chewed a hole in a sock so I gave her a rawhide chew instead and found that she had a VORACIOUS appetite for the rawhide and nearly ate the whole thing while I watched a 30 minute tv show. This was unusual, as she usually just hides her chews around the house rather then eats them.
Also, previous to that I noticed she was adamant about eating my food, I showed her to her food dish and she ate everything in the dish (a first in the last 3 days we've had her). She seemed extra hungry, but I figured it was because she and I had been playing for a while in the yard and swimming (she was extremely excited to get the ball from the pool so she ran laps around the outside of the pool).
I keep combing over everything. I am hoping this isn't a regular occurrence, maybe just a minor blip.
