Default Metacam or Royal Canin Mobility Diet

The vet has said I should choose one of these routes for Toffee now. I'm reluctant to put her on painkillers for the rest of her life and the side effects of the Metacam, should be unfortunate enough to suffer them, are pretty nasty. But the RC food is twice as expensive as the cheapest Metacam.

Toffee is also quite overweight. So I am wondering if a diet and gentle exercise will be sufficient to keep her active. Any one had any experience of both of them?
