Default Good and Bad fresh foods for toy dogs

my puppy loves raw bananas and banana chips, raw carrots, cooked rice with boiled chicken, carrots, peas and green beans, also loves baked potatoes, as well as sweet potatoes/yams dehydrated with chicken wrapped around them, he also loves lettuce and dehydrated chicken, beef and lamb strips, basically a balanced holistic diet as well as daily fresh water and puppy food the rest of the above items are more of a once a week treat as to not upset his intestines and have runny excrement ... I also know that grapes, raisins, raw potatoes, onions, garlic, avocados are a no no and can be toxic.

What I am looking for is advice on what other items he can have that are natural/ holistic that would be good for him and what other items to avoid.. I have read a balanced diet of proteins , fruits , vegetables and grains are key to help with his coat since yorkies have problems with eczema and itching and am trying to avoid this issue and help him live the healthiest life possible.. please advise a list of items he can and cannot eat thanks

Smile Welcome to the forum!

I feed my 2 dogs home cooked and raw--including raw meat). I know you prob. don't want to feed raw meat so won't go into that subject! Just wanted to comment on a couple of things----Probably not getting much nutrition from the raw carrots but are good for a treat type thing to chew on--prob. good for the teeth too. But cooked carrots are best for nutrition. Raw veggies need to be 'pulverized' (about size of a pin head--ground very fine)--as dogs cannot break down the celluloid walls of veggies--so go through the system quickly without being digested---notice the poo after eating raw carrots!

One of my dogs loves raw asparagus---a lot of dogs do! But left whole as a treat--not much nutrition again unless ground really fine--maybe he would eat it raw ground up too. I do both as I can't stop my dog from loving and grabbing asparagus spears from the bag of veggies I bring in from my garden!
Lol, he waits at the garden fence for me to throw the spears to him! But you could add it to your chicken and rice but add it towards the end of cooking (cut it in fine pieces) The less cooking time--the less nutrients not cooked out--Heat destroys vitamins, etc. I just realized--If I was not feeding raw meat and cooked it all the time--I would/should supplement with a good multi dog vitamin that had ample amounts of vitamin B (all B vitamins combined in proper ratio) as Vitamin B is pretty much destroyed by heat!
(I use no commercial dog food!)

You mentioned eczema and itching----Grains can be a problem for this in many dogs. Rice is prob. okay and oatmeal is not bad--Depends on the individual dog as to what grains are best to stay away from. I would definitely stay away from corn/cornmeal!! And wheat can also be a problem with a lot of dogs too. Put--> dogs grains-- in your browser for more info!

Sounds like you have a dehydrator-- as do I! I mainly do sweet potatoes/yams----Never thought of wrapping in chicken but I do sprinkle with cinnamon after placing the raw slices on the trays. BUT PLEASE NEVER ALLOW YOUR DOG TO HAVE NUTMEG---VERY BAD/DANGEROUS FOR THEM!!!

I am going to give you a link to a thread I started in this forum about things that are hazardous to your dog. A very long read but worth the time--I bet you will learn many things you didn't know about!--->

Foods that are hazardous to a dog

I don't know why I have this feeling--but I hope you are making sure he gets enough protein!

I am going to give a couple more links to info in here that you might find informative. This 1st one is about pumpkin--Be sure to read the posts further down esp. to know what is good for---and it is best to add the same ratio of yogurt with it---THE PLAIN UNSUGARED UNFLAVORED KIND WITH THE LIVE ACTIVE CULTURES WITH ACIDOPHILUS AND BIFIDUS in it or something close to that. Pumpkin

This thread is rather long but keep reading all the posts--I have a habit of continually adding more as I find more info later on!!! Vinegar is good for many things---My 2 dogs get it in their evening meal every day! You will especially notice what it says about itchy skin but read all the other good things too! What About Vinegar!!

And if you haven't already done so--You might try adding these words in your browser: dogs home cooked meals; dogs proper protein; dogs itchy skin; dogs eczema; dogs eggs; dogs fish oil as well as the dogs grains I mentioned above.
