Default Taking Care of The Ears--hints

CLEANING:
To prevent your dog or cat from scratching his ears, saturate a cotton ball with white vinegar and wipe out the inside of his ears on a regular basis.

To clean ear wax from your pet's ears, moisten a cotton ball with baby oil and gently wipe the inside of the ear.

EAR MITES:
To prevent your dog or cat from getting an ear mite infestation, once a month, dip a Q-tip cotton swab in hydrogen peroxide, and gently use it to clean out the ear canal. Many dogs enjoy this treatment, which removes ear mites before they can set up shot. Me talking here!--I hesitated about putting this hint here as it really isn't a good idea to use a cotton swab in a dog's ear---If you go too deep --Can puncture/ruin the ear drum----Even the most careful person could go too far. Wondering if it would be better to use a cotton square or a cotton round --You buy them like that. They may not do as good a job but it would be safer! So be forewarned and be very careful if you do use the Q-tips!!!

Instead of using medications to treat your dog or cat for ear mites, put one or two drops of warm baby oil in your pet's ear to simply coat the ear canal without flooding it. The mites drown in the oil, which gives your pet instant relief. Repeat every day or so for a month so the oil drowns any
mites that hatch from eggs before they can lay more eggs.

You can also kill ear mites by putting a few drops of vegetable oil into your dog's ear and massage. Use a cotton ball to clean out all debris. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the pet's sensitive skin, smothers the mites, and promotes healing. (Now why wouldn't you do this for a month like stated just above-- so the oil drowns any
mites that hatch from eggs before they can lay more eggs.)

Before using medications to treat your pet for ear mites, clear away the crumbly, reddish-black waxy debris (that looks like coffee grounds) from inside the ear by using a small dropper to put several drops of baby oil inside the ear canal. Wait several hours, giving the crust time to soften, and then fill a ball syringe with equal parts white vinegar and lukewarm water to gently rinse the ear clean. Wipe the ear clean with a cotton ball. If matter remains in the ear, repeat the entire process as many times as needed.

To determine whether your pet has ear mites, gently swab the ear canal with a Q-tip cotton swab
NOTE here again the dangers of using these Q-tips as stated above in the 1st paragraph under the heading--Ear Mites!! Rub the cotton swab on a black sheet of paper, hold the paper under a bright light, and look for small wiggly white specks.

If your dog or cat gets ear mites, crush 4 cloves of garlic and steep them overnight in 1 cup of olive oil. In the morning, remove the crushed garlic and throw it away. Heat the olive oil until it's warm to the touch, and put several drops into your pet's ears to smother the ear mites and relieve itching. Repeat every other day for several weeks.

If ear mites refuse to disappear after a month of home treatment or your pet develops a painful rash in the ear, take him to your vet!

INFECTIONS:
If your dog gets water in his ears during a swim, reduce the chances of a bacterial or fungal infection by flushing out his ears with a solution made from 2 tablespoons of ReaLemon lemon juice and 1 cup warm water. You can prob. use regular lemon juice!
