Default Anxiety attacks in an old Saluki

Our old Saluki Kadin (13 years this December) has recently started what appear to be anxiety/panic attacks at night. He is an whole male who has gone deaf. He has a slightly enlarged heart and so gets some fluid on his lungs. This does not appear to distress him during the day when he's sleeping (most of the day!). Something wakes him and then he spends the next two hours pacing around the house, barking to go out, barking to come back in. All the time panting. If I sit him down and stroke his ears then the panting subsides but he continues to make swallowing movements. Eventually he will drop off the sleep. You can hear him breathing but it isn't laboured. Oddly it's not every night but appears to be every other night. As we've got hot weather we thought that might be the trigger but last night we had the air conditioning running so it wasn't hot at all.

Any clues? I don't want him on medication if it's not needed.

With his age my best suggestion would be to discuss it with your vet.

I really don't know what to say about this. Especially him having problems internally. What did the doctor previously say about this?

To me it sounds like he is under a lot of stress with this. Any dog to be awakened from this condiction and then to pace around like you mentioned, is needing to be checked out by his vets.

This would be stressful on any dog of any age.
Take care.
