Default HELP! Healthy and Holistic Dog Food Advice Needed!

Hello, my name is Carrie. I recently have spent all my free hours perusing the internet, trying hopelessly to find a reputable dry dog food that is healthy, safe, and at a lower price range (around $50 dollar range).

I have a year and a half old boxer/pointer mix and I've been feeding him purina one for most of his life. Recently, after doing a bit of research online about different health aspects of dog food, I realized what I was feeding him was basically crap (no offense Purina, but your food has no nutritional quality what-so-ever).

A few of the foods I came up with were Blue, or Taste of the Wild, but after scanning through numerous reviews of them, I found out that they weren't very high-standing to a lot of people either. (Blue seemed to have been recalled for many different and off-putting reasons, while TOTW seemed to give many dogs allergy issues).

I'm asking for a bit of help here. I need some advice on different, very respectable dog food brands that are easy to come by, healthy for Tucker, and on the lower end of the price range.

Keep in mind that Tucker is 75 pounds and mildy active, so I'm not looking for a food that one would use for a very active working dog, just something for a pet.

Thank you guys!

I love both Blue and TOTW. One of my dogs is allergic to specific foods and she has done well on both. Blue does have many different varieties. I've used Wilderness and Basics without a problem. And a few others on here also think the quality of the 2 Brands you mentioned are good.

If you slowly ween your boy off whatever he's currently on and give one of the new brands a go, you can test & see how your dog does on it. Pay attention to his stools/gas and coat/skin and over all health & energy at about a months time. If all seems good, then keep on it. Many times it's the bad fillers and specific food ingredients that do our dogs harm when it comes to commercial foods. As for recalls, Blue did have some a time back but you see it can happen to any & all foods. Even fruits & vegs we, the humans, consume. I feel they took care of the problem and hopefully (if anything) learned to have better quality control out of it all. But who's to say a $1000 brand doesn't one day slip up too? I also took a long time sifting through the net and articles trying to research commercial brands and still feel confident with Blue & TOTW. I spent a lot of money, time & worry helping my dog get better and I quickly realized you really have to figure out what is best for your own dog in the long run no matter what other people say. It's your baby and each situation is different.

My two (free) go to sites on comm foods are: Dog Food Reviews - Main Index - Powered by ReviewPost

Dog Food Reviews | Dog Food Ratings

You may have already run into them but they are top notch reviews from what I've seen.

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"
