Default Newfie Jhas hip dysplasia

I am just looking for some advice for my Newfie's Hip Dysplasia we are unable to get surgery for her.

I would like to know if I can give her something natural or the pain pills that the vets gives me and any other suggestions would be very helpful

Thank you
Maria

I have no experience of Newfies but we had a Golden Retriever and the vet said that she had the worst case of hip dysplasia he had ever seen. We were very careful to keep her weight down, we were strict about jumping - she wasn't allowed to play frisbee for instance! - and we made sure she had a swim each week.

When we got her at the age of 2 the vet said that there was nothing that could be done and she would probably only have a few years of active life and would in all probability be in so much pain that she would have to be PTS by the time she was 8.

She had a full and active life with no sign of illness and she fell asleep in her basket for the last time at the age of 15!! Each day she would go up and down the stairs to go out at least a couple of times, even at the end.

I am sure that the diet and swimming benefited her enormously and kept her pain free.

We are making a wheel chair this coming weekend for our oldest saint bernard. She has severe hip dysplasia. There isn't even a hip socket on one leg and that leg just hangs now. She lost the use of it completely last Saturday. We are giving her glucosamine with chondriotin. Make sure you give those two together because the chondroitin helps the body absorb the glucosamine. If the glusamine is given by itself, it won't do much good. Ask your vet about Tramadol for pain. If you are or know anybody who is mechanically inclined, you can make your dog a wheelchair. If you want to buy one, you can buy one from Eddies wheels for $400.00 and up for a your dog's size. It will cost $800.00 if we bought one from there, so we are making one.
