Addison's Disease
Hello, I'm new to this forum and would love to get your help with my beautiful Niki. Niki is an 8 year old border collie x kelpie and 6 weeks ago I almost lost her when she suffered what we know now to be an addisonian crisis. She had not eaten for 2 days and I knew there was something wrong so I took her to the vet. Niki had 2 lots of donor stem cells, first time in May last year by IV and the second in July by injections directly into her hips as she had severe hip dysplasia. I now believe that her immune system attacked the donor stem cells and this is why her adrenal glands were destroyed. I won't ever forgive myself for causing this. At first her vet thought her not eating was because the arthritis had gone into her jaw and took blood tests to check her out. I am so grateful that he is such a wonderful vet. I had noticed that since the stem cell treatments that Niki had been losing a lot of fur and her hips were giving her a lot more pain. I now know that these are just a couple of the many symptoms of Addision's disease. When the blood results came back my vet rang and ordered me to bring her in straight away for treatment. Niki is on Percorten-V every 28 days and a daily dose of prednisolone. Initially her prednisolone was 5mg daily but after 3 weeks of treatment she began episodes of incontinence i.e. poly uria poly dipsia. Her prednisolone was reduced to 2.5 mg per day but the incontinence continued and it was further reduced to 1.25 mg per day but still she is having episodes of incontinence. Niki is scheduled for her third Percorten-V injection and blood tests next Saturday. Apart from the incontinence and her extreme thirst, she drinks about 3 to 4 litres of water daily, she is the most active she has been in years. Her fur has stopped falling out and is regrowing, the pain in her hips has subsided dramatically and I no longer have to give her anti-inflammatories or pain relief. Has anyone else had this problem of incontinence with their dog? Have you any advice for me? Many thanks, mary06

Never give Proin---Link here on Proin--Read it all please and note that there are 1or 2 other names for this killer-crap--See them in the link so you know what all the names are!!! It sounds like your dog is on enough meds but even if she was not on any--Never give Proin!!!!
Is your dog on PROIN? READ THIS!
To read more in here on incontinence --see the blue strip that goes across the top of page(s) in here. See the white word Search more to the right in the blue strip, click on it. Put incontinence in the box and select threads. I would find you some but it is very late and I need to go to bed! There are various alternatives to try for incontinence that will be mentioned in the threads you can find. Maybe tomorrow I will look some up too!

Hello CorkyMax,
Hope you had a good night's sleep. It's 5.30 am Sydney (Australia) time so I've just gotten up.
Thank you for the information about Proin. No Niki is not on this nor any other drug to stop the incontinence. I believe her incontinence is being caused by the overload of prednisolone, which needs more adjustment or a switch to a new glucocortoid as she needs this to survive due to her body not producing any because of the Addison's disease. Iv'e done a lot of research and will take the information with me to the vet at our next appointment in 4 days. I will most certainly not allow Niki to be put on Prion.
Once again thank you.

I guess I don't know for sure what you are asking about here! My main reason for answering your post was to make sure you knew about Proin. It sounds like you have gathered a lot of info. But will put a couple of links here anyway: The Difference Between Prednisolone and Prednisone for Dogs - VetInfo
Prednisone / Prednisolone - Page 1
Sorry, I am not doing a good job here! Maybe someone else can answer better.
