Default incontinence???

We have a beautiful 13 year old Akita who can no longer control himself. Is that a matter of age or could it be something else I need to worry about? And what do you do about it? Please help.......

If he hasn't already, he needs to be fully checked out by a vet to make sure he has no health problems. AS well as a full 'MOT', take a urine sample for testing & see if the vet thinks its worth running some bloods to check his kidney function.

Is he dribbling urine, or just not able to hold it? As dogs get older, their muscles do get weaker, which means (like a human) his bladder and pelvic muscles responsible for holding urine in will not be as strong as they used to be. He needs to be let out to pass urine more often, and plenty of TLC. Never tell him off for passing urine inthe urine - he isprobably upset by it himself anyway.

Let me know the outcome.

Default Incontinence

Hi,
Judging by the age it is oikly to be weak bladder and pelvic muscles. You could also try Danex24, a 100% natural health supplement which actually works. I have used it since October 2005. No fleas, more energy, more appetite, better immune system, bladder control, better joint movements.

Good luck

Hope all is well with your boy. If it's a matter of leaky old plumbing, I feel for you! My 14 year old aussie leaks like a sieve. Her renal function is "good for her age", but now she's prone to urinary tract infections because the more they leak, the more likely they don't completely void when they DO go outside.

You could talk to your vet about Phenylpropanolamine (it's the stuff the FDA took out of Dexatrim and cold meds a couple of years ago). It works best on females, but can help males. We tried it for about two weeks, and did see an improvement, but I also noticed a change in her disposition, so it's back to Poise pads! (I made the cutest little black & white "g-strings" with mother of pearl snaps...)

One last note: If your boy likes to sleep like my girl -- with one foot under his belly -- take care if his foot gets wet. Repeated urine soakings plays havoc on pads and toenails!

Best regards.

Default Best way

If your dog has an incontinence problem the best way to go is to get bed pads, which are basically a diaper that you can lay flat on the ground. You can train your dog to use the bathroom on these sheets. They were great, every time my dog had to go he just went on the bed pads and I just roll the sheets up and threw them away. Check this site ; they have a good selection of sizes.
