My friend's golden retriever and Brittany also smell like maple syrup after hiking. Our short haired dogs don't have the same smell. (Their sleek coats don't seem to pick up the odor.) I looked at the pictures of the white flowering plants and they look familiar. The long haired dogs must pick up the scent after running through the bushes.

My Australian Shepherd puppy smells like a ferret. Even the vet comented on it and none of us can figure out what's causing it.
