Default Royal Canin

I was wondering if anybody has had any success with this food? I am currently a grad. student at NCSU studying animal nutrition, and can get this food at a very discounted price. I don't really like ALL of the formulas (ingredient wise) but I do like the "Mini Special 30" for picky dogs or dogs with sensitivities (I have a very picky 8 month old papillon and I think this food may work well for him). Any experiences with this?

Default I have used Royal Canin

Hi! I have used several different brands of dog food in an effort to find a superior brand which would not upset my dog's sensitive stomach.

But, I now only use Royal Canin, Sensible Choice, chicken meal and rice formula as a training treat. I also use it in my dog's Kong toy.

I consulted my dog trainer to get her imput, too. She strongly recommended using Wellness, Super 5 Mix, and it is a really good food. I mix the Wellness Super 5 Mix with Pro Plan Extra Care, Sensitive Skin and Stomach formula. As a result, my young Siberian Husky has no skin problems, and no stomach upsets!

My kennel originally gave me the Royal Canin sample, but I recommend taking a look at the Wellness brand, especially the Super 5 mix. My dog trainer thought that there were better brands out there than the Royal Canin brand.

I hope that this helps!

Thanks for your help. I have tried the Wellness when I first got my puppy, and the new re-formulated version did not agree with him. He got very sick (vomiting and explosive diarrhea), had to go to the vet for IV's because he was dehydrated, etc and found it was all food related. Switched him to a new food and the very next day he was better. I also prefer not to use Wellness because it has menadione (synthetic Vit. K) in it. It didn't work for my dog (and a few others had some problems too), but I know it has works for others at the same time--glad your dog does well on it

Default Royal

I have a 5 months old rottweiler.I try almost evry kind of food and i can tell you that royal canine a very good choise. Why?He gets Royal Canine Rottweiler Junior and since his fur is shining , he has great muscles and he has lots of energy. The ingredients are very good.I've been using Hill's Natures Best Large breed junior befor which is also a super premium dog food and I recommend it.

If any rottweiler owner reads this I have an other advice. If your feeding him Royal.C be caerfull because rotties have problems with their joints and royal canin has a few extra fats that might not be the best thing to a rottweiler so after 2 years switch to an other brand of food.I recommend Hill's Natures Best Large Breed because it doesn't contain any extra fats and its very good for activ dogs.Hill's its my second best choise, its a very good brand of food.

I don't recommend Hill's at all because it has corn in it.

I agree with Luna! I don't feed any commercial dog food---I feed raw and home cooked. But I believe if I did---It sure wouldn't be Hill's! Hill's would be very close to the bottom of the list--Prob. Ol' (Old?)Roy would be at the bottom. And note that you are not going to find good dog food in grocery stores or Walmart, etc! Corn is a cheap filler with not much nutritional value for dogs either. A lot of dogs don't do grains well and corn is the worst grain of all for that.

I would also note that most 5 month old dogs are not going to show ill results of poor nutrition right now as they will later in time---About the same thing if you think of teens eating all junk food---Doesn't show so much now but will as they get older. Some things take time!

Taste of the Wild, Blue Buffalo, Chicken Soup for Dogs, Evo. Those are good if you are into kibble. You can also home-cook their meals. Even table scraps is better than what's in most dog food. And you can also feed a raw diet.

Once again I feel compelled to give this link to a thread done in here a while back whenever someone may be thinking of feeding raw or home cooked. It is even good to read this thread if you are feeding regular dog food.----> Foods that are hazardous to a dog
This is a lot of reading but very much worth it to know about!!

My dogs have really improved since switching to Nutro, lamb and rice. Blue Buffalo is great, but my big girl doesn't like it.

My two girls eat the Acana Lamb & Apple along with their home cooked diet. They snack on the Acana throughout the day and get their home cooked meal at night. They're both doing very well on it.
