However, the following morning, when she still had'nt eaten I rang an emergency vet, who told me not to give her the shot and take her back to the vets. This time it was a different one, he was very through and done alot of tests, it showed up that my dog had Ketones, (toxins in the urine and can comatose or kill a dog) plus Cushings Desease. It has been a real struggle to get my dog back to anywhere near to the lively little thing she was, but thankfully, after 10 days, she has finally started eating, has a spring in her step and hopefully has a few more good years in her.

Has your vet talked to you about either Ketones or Cushing?. Have Urine tests been done on you're dog? Ketones can make a dog very ill, it can only be controlled by Insulin, but you cannot inject a dog who has an empty stomach, so it is a vicious circle, in the end, we had to syringe food into her mouth. Thankfully, my Molly seems to have come through the other side, I hope you'rs does to.

Mollys mom,

I had a dog with cushings in the past, usually dogs are maintained with 2 shots of insulin per day, I would ask your vet about this, the ketones will make a dog very ill, but the blood glucose must come down and thats hard to do with 1 shot per day, when a diabetic dog refuses to eat it usually means their blood glucose is high, they still need some insulin when they do not eat, not the full dose. I think the 1 shot a day caused the high ketones, has your vet mentioned doing a curve on your pet or home testing the blood glucose? email me if need more info.

Don't worry because, The good news is that diabetes in dogs, like the similar disease in people, is usually manageable and can have little effect on your dog's ability to live a full and happy life. But as with many potentially serious health problems, owners must be attentive to their dog's well-being so they can seek professional care at the earliest signs of sickness or decline, and before serious damage is done.

Hi, really sorry to hear about your dog. My black lab was diagnosed 2 weeks ago and since being on insulin would not eat. He had a glucose curve last wednesday and the vet tried him with precscription i/d canine food and at the moment he is eating - he lost soo much weight and at the moment is have trouble with his legs they seem to be very very weak but am hoping now he is eating again he will build his strength back up. The vet seems to think his legs could be down to the insulin. Does anyone else have the experience regarding the legs.

Really hope your dog will start eating soon. I know this is so worrying but hopefully all will pick up very soon. Try him on the tinned food and see how he goes.

Default "Beatie"

Hi All~
New to this site and interested in ANY info.My yellow lab Harley was diagnosed in April 08.He was immediately put on Vetsulin and had weekly blood sugar testings. It took a good 6-8 weeks to find an amount that kept him at a good level.Harley was 105 pds. when he was diagnosed and has maintained a fairly good weight,he is now 94,very lean though.I have not seen any postings as of yet where someone is giving their diabetic dog ANYwhere near the amount of insulin that Harley gets.He is receiving 31 cc. 2x a day.The VET has told me that I should not be concerned unless the amt.increases to close to his weight.Me,not knowing anything about diabetic dogs and insulin can only trust him that he knows what he's talking about! Is there anyone out there that gives their large dog the same amount of insulin?? Another thing that is concerning me is he moans alot when he rolls himself over or goes to lay down.He does not rest his back left leg down when standing but runs around fine...I don't get it?His diet consists of only "people food",proteins and veggies. No carbs.(only brown rice)I have seen that most seem to feed only boiled chicken and NO fats.Is that just for diet treatable diabetes or should i be careful with fats if he's getting insulin too? I found a recipe for "diabetic dog treats" online and he loves them, made from beef liver, wheat flour and eggs.He has started being picky about eating like his appetite is declining.I'm afraid to give him his shots when he doesn't eat much being that he gets such a large dosage of insulin.I would love to get some feedback .Is this sounding way to familiar to some of you?...let me know....By the way..my husband says he wants to be MY dog in his next life cause I spoil them all! And my kids call him "Beatie" now..get it? Dia-Beatie?

With new medication out, diabetes in dogs isn't near as bad as it used to be. If you can get them regulated on insulin (just as with people), there is no reason that they can't live completely normal lives.

It's been 10 months now since I lost my dog to diabetes, and I miss him so much and dream about him sometimes......I wish he was still alive and I loved him so much and will never forget him.
I feel like we were robbed of help from the vets and feel so angry inside.
Money should be secondary when an animal is ill, but vets don't care enough to put the animal first......I will always love you Brandy my lovely dog and faithful friend.

What do you feel like the vet should have done differently since you could not afford the treatment?

What makes you feel like vets "don't care enough to put the animal first?" Your particular case? Or is there anything else that makes you think that?

The vet could have offered to help by sorting out a payment plan.....there isn't enough help in the UK for people (and their pets ) who are on a low income.
I felt like the vet had just written my dog off and had decided for me there was nothing that could be done for him......he was such a lovely dog and I feel like I failed him......it's so unfair!

Also I keep reading on this thread how people can manage the treatment of their pets diabetes easily.....well I only wish I had gotten the chance to try!!....I think this is what irks me so much about losing him.....I never had chance to help him and feel like I failed him, I don't think I will ever get over this....he was not just a dog he was my best friend, I had him from a puppy and he was just crazy when he was younger, I wish I had the chance to start all over again with him.....I'd certainly get him insured and not give him treats and stuff.......lets face it, it's hard to say no when they give you those puppy eyes!!

Exclamation Doggy Diabetes

My dog Pita was dignosed in October 2009, and has dropped from 46 to 40 pounds since. She has responded so well to the Vetsulin, we have had to lower her dosage twice. She goes for curve now every three months, and seems to be doing very well. My biggest concern is whether to still give her the insulin if she's not eating... she went a full 24 hours without anything staying in her (vomitting) and was shaking, and letharic, as if her levels were low. I did not give her the insulin yesterday, and today she has excessive thirst. I don't know if it's from dehydration or the diabetes... She has eaten twice today now and has kept all her food down, so I gave the insulin. Still new at this, and not sure how to give... Our vet is great, and knows a great deal about diabetes, but like everyone else, we have spent a small fortune now and can't afford the frequent trips to the vet... Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hello,
Have you had her glucose levels checked recently? that could be the cause of all of it.
ask your vet what foods you can vary her diet with. some veggies, yogurt, prescription canned - just enough to coat the dry..
feed her in her crate?

A glucose test is not going to be the cause of all of it. The dog is diabetic. Testing urine and glucose will have no effect on the dog with regards to the condition it is in already.
This site may help to clarify Diabetes in canines as well as address high fiber food as it is slower to digest with less sugar thus slow to digest means there is no sugar rush to the blood stream or system.
Good luck. I have gone through this myself in the past.
