Looking to find a dog to live with me in RI
HI Everyone,
I am new to this website + am wondering if anyone knows where I can find a dog 40 pounds or under(requirement of apartment), as I live in a nice 2 bedroom apartment in Middletown, RI. I have been searching shelters online, but have not had good luck in finding a dog. I have checked out a couple of shelters in Portsmouth, RI without finding my special dog. I also would like to have 2 small dogs, so they can keep one another company during the day while I work. I can walk them at lunchtime, as I am only 5 minutes away. If anyone knows of a shelter website or shelter I can contact, please let me know. Also if you know of a personor family that has to give up a small dog due to moving etc., I would be more than willing to talk to them. Thank you.
Regards,
Pam

I don't know any personal breeders or anything, but definately try to google search breeders in your area. Try PetFinder.com for your adoption area. If you have already tried that, and if your looking for dogs from personal homes, try Craigs List ( craigslist: rhode island classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events) and go to RI section, than go under 'pets'. Sorry its not more help but I wish you the best of luck!

The best thing to do is research dog breeds - even if your goal is to adopt a mix breed. Reason being, once you have an idea on the general breeds you like, you can then go to petfinder.com and look up those breeds and their mixes. That will keep you in the general size range you need to stay in.
If you decide to go with a purebred and to purchase one, however, do not purchase a dog off an interent ad by any means! Good breeders really don't need to advertise as they generally have waiting lists for their puppies (that is a good sign). Also a good sign is if they ask you to fill out an adoption application and grill you about your background and dog experience. All these things are means to show you that the do truly care. The best place to find ethical and knoweldgable breeders is at dog shows. The two largest and most reputable organizations that sanction dog shows in this country are the American Kennel Club and the United Kennel Club. You can find out where shows are in your area (and you don't need to just look at conformation shows - you can also try agility, obedience and even performance events like shooting, herding, earthdog, etc.). Even if you are unsuccessful in finding someone at the shows who is selling puppies, dog people know dog people, so ask questions - just don't pester anyone right[I before they go in the ring! To find shows go to these websites and click on the "Events" tab:

There are no such things as "teacup" yorkies. There is only one size of yorkshire terrier accepted within the breed standard - anything under seven pounds. Any Yorkie, regardless of size, if it has two parents that were registered as yorkies will be a Yorkie with no other designation- nevera teacup.
The official standard of the Yorkshire Terrier as adopted by the Yorshire Terrier Club of America (YTCA): Yorkshire Terrier Club of America Official Breed Standard
The YTCA code of ethics: Yorkshire Terrier Club of America Code of Ethics
"Teacup" is simply a marketing term, which used is in violation of the YTCA code. Sadley is often attributed with unknowledgable breeders and unethical breeding practices. If your puppies are truly healthy and registered Yorkie puppies, you'd be advised not to market them as "teacups" and to learn more about your breed history and standard.
Many dogs have died from being bred to be undersized and many people have been scamed into buying sickly dogs. This practice of selling "teacups" needs to STOP! The Yorkshire Terrier was once considered a very healthy breed but thanks to the likes of those selling "Teacups" that cannot be said anymore. In fact, I have turned people away from buying Yorkies in recent years because of the exponential growth in their popularity and the numbers of people who are breeding them who know very little about dog breeding and breeding of yorkies in particular!

This might help
A small dog if you want one would be a chiuahuah. Or otherwize maybe a Yorkie but they can cost up to 3000 dollars!!! Have you ever try a Humaine Society?? You should try that. That's where I got my small dog from. Thanks,
Bye

Years ago purebred dogs were purely for the rich and famous. Today purebred dogs are more affordable because of the huge amount of competition in the dog breeding industry. Some breeders concentrate on purebreds, while others prefer to focus their attention on mixed breed or cross breed dogs. Different forms of breeding exist, and these include out-crossing, inbreeding and line breeding.

The dogs should be registered at kennel clubs. Stud owners should also be registered to enable you to receive the necessary documents. The American Kennel Club, or AKC as it is known, is quite popular in the US and it maintains a large database of dogs, including information about their lineage, achievements, and working qualities. These dogs are also associated with the kennel clubs in the US.
