Default crazy over lasers

I have two boxers and BOY does my male love lasers. As shorthaired dogs, boxers aren't really made to be outdoors. It's winter here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and if anyone else lives here (or knows about here) You know NO animal (outdoor or in) wants to be outside for more than it takes to relieve itself. So dog walks are almost out of the question. My female who is older, doesn't breathe well in the extremes of weather, either so being outdoors for her is difficult, especially now when averaging 2 degrees F is like the bahamas.

I find that the laser is a great indoor source of exercise and brain stimulation. Both my boxers display a very well prey-drive. While some owners hide treats around the house or hide special toys, i find the laser works great with understimulated dogs. Mine exercise and their brains are stimulated by the activity and their prey-drive. A good ten-fifteen minutes and my dogs are wiped out for the day.

With any laser, you should not aim it directly in anyone's eyes (dogs or humans). Take care not to drag the laser over precious valuables that an overexcited dog may bump into (or throw themself into, depeding on the dog.)

Has anyone else ever used this as a temporary means of excersise?

(sorry, i realize this should have been in health or dog chat)

I would be very careful using lasers with your dog. I've been hearing more and more cases of dogs developing OCD-like behaviors from their use.

That's pretty new issue, a dog is like developing bone disease playing with laser.

My dog goes gaga over laser light. I think it's ok to use it in training a dog for as long as you don't point a laser light at your dog's eyes for it can harm his eyes!

our boy loves to play with the laser light just like my 1 year old kitten. he starts chasing it around and if she sees that he has lost track of it she takes that opprotunety to play with it on her own till he realizes whats going on.

with 13 cats, I have been using them for years with no problems. I just got done using it and my German Pinscher goes nuts chasing it half the time running down the cats to get to it. Aiming it in their eyes is an obvious no but I have never found any of my dogs to have problems from playing and chasing one.

I used to use a lazer pointer to exercise my cat (now since passed). She loved it. Last night I rediscovered how much my American Eskimo Dog L-O-V-E-S to play catch with a latex balloon. She taps it up in the air over and over like a rock concert croud with a beach ball! :-D

I have never used a Laser pointer but one of my dogs absolutely goes CrAzY over flashlight and the light that comes from them.

I have a friend who has been using a lazor with his pittbull ever since he was old enough to romp around and now he constantly looks for it even when it's not even on. It's very frustrating because this once lovable dog is too busy looking for the red dot instead of saying hello to you. Of course this is just ONE dog , and I'm sure in moderation it's ok just don't make it a daily habit.
