A few years ago when I still had 2 cats (one has since passed away), a tiny mouse appeared in my apt. Heaven only knows how it got in. At the time I lived on the 18th floor. Anyway, there were both cats laying side by side, looking at this tiny mouse and looking at one another, clearly completely perplexed. Neither one of them had any idea what this little creature was or what they were supposed to do with it. Actually, I was rather pleased at the time because I wasn't put in the position of having to fight off two murderous felines in order to save the life of that mouse.

Eventually, I picked the little thing up (it was so terrified that it couldn't move), and took it down the elevator and around the back of the building where the garbage is kept and released it. Thankfully, the weather was warm or I would have had to borrow a cage and keep the little thing. It wasn't until I got back to my apt. that I realised that I had two of the dumbest cats ever to grace the planet!!!

Having 11 cats I can relate. Especially if the cats are males, they make for lousy mousers. My Manx breeding tom who has since past was on my lap one evening shortly after moving to the farm. In the corner of the living room up on the back of one of the dog beds popped up a small tiny field mouse. Both Tigger and I saw it. I waited at first to see what Tigger would do. Finally he got up and with a big stretch and yawn jumped down and slowly walked over to the dog bed. By that time the little mouse had darted around the corner of the wall to the kitchen. Tigger inspected the dog bed and with no mouse to find he came back over, jumped back in my lap and laid back down. Within a few minutes the mouse came around the corner and instead of leaving with his booty, he again popped up on the back of the dog bed. The whole thing started all over again with Tigger standing, stretching then yawning and slowly walking over to the dog bed to inspect and find nothing. This event occurred for the next 6 days at nearly the exact time every evening. If one of my female cats had ever noticed, it would have been a different story.

Both of mine were female. I put it down to them both being indoor city cats who had never seen a mouse before. I swear, the two of them were studying that mouse as if it was some kind of scientific experiment gone wrong!!!

Well, it could be that they had seen it previously and related to it as a member of the household
I know when it comes to my birds, this is common. I went to feed the dogs a couple days ago and after leaning down to put Zeke's food dish in his crate I stood up and on the end of the console stereo were 3 cats all sitting looking intently in my direction. How I did not see it I do not know but right there on the corner was Aura my Myers parrot. She had some how gotten out of her cage and landed clear in the living room. The odd thing is that my cats will inspect the birds in the house but never go after them, yet if a bird flies in my outside, all hell breaks loose with cats flying all over the bookshelves trying to kill it. Go figure, I chalk it up to the indoor birds being family. Hell, the cats sleep on top of the bird cages half the time and the birds don't care what so ever.

Funny you should mention birds...Before I had my pigeon netting installed, one evening a tiny bat flew into my apt. The two cats couldn't have cared less! They seemed more perturbed that the bat had disturbed their collective naps. After giving it "the evil eye", they both promptly went back to sleep leaving me to figure out how to catch the little guy and return him outside. In all honesty though, I was grateful that they seemed to have no hunting instincts.

A friend of mine used to bring her hamster to my place and let her run around in one of those ball things. One evening, she must have slammed into something a little too hard and the ball opened. She was in the kitchen at the time and, we were sitting in the living room. The only way we knew that something was amiss was that Bailey came dashing into the living room and kept barking and pawing at us until we got up to see what she was upset about. Bailey was very fond of that hamster. There was the hamster sitting in the middle of the kitchen floor sans protective ball with two cats fast asleep not 3 feet away from her. Sometimes, it is a good thing to have stupid cats!!!

Well I can't say the same for my cat, Pete. He is the neighborhood rodent terrorist. I have had him for 3 years and incidently I haven't even seen a rabbit in my yard in 3 years. A few months ago he even brought me a little garden snake and left it by the steps. Thank God it was dead or I would have wet my pants.
