We resuced Riley from the animal shelter last March. He was a basset/lab mix and had been there for 5 1/2 months. He was very shy for the first day in our house but that was the end of his shyness. He got along famously with our 6 cats and took total command of all 21 acres of our land. He knew every inch of it, including the pond, since we took 4-5 walks a day with him. He was never allowed in the front yard and seemed to know that the porch was his limit.
Last night as we finished up dinner dishes, Riley whined to go outside. We opened the door as usual and after 5 minutes - no Riley. He was dead in the road with a white cat nearby. We think he chased the unknown cat and jsut did not think about the road. We are sad.

I am new on this site. As I was scrolling around and saw your post with the name Riley on it. My heart goes out to you. We had a Wheaton Terrier for 13 years who was named Riley as well. No matter how it comes to an end, its alway painful. The good news is that I do believe that all dogs go to heaven so one dat, hopefully not too soon you will be reunited.
