YLab1992 is on a distinguished road
Default Huck, 10-16-07

The last time I found myself on this site, our Yellow lab of 15 years drowned in our pool.

Now, I am back as we have recently moved California.

We were relieved that we no longer had a pool, with what happened to our Lab and having 2 infants, a nice sized yard, was perfect for everyone and safe.

At around 4pm, 10/16/07, Huck, a miniature schnauzer 6 years old, somehow in the confusion got out of our home as my wife entered with our 2 little ones.

Huck (short for Huckleberry) was odd for a schnauzer. He was a lap dog and was great with the kids. He wanted what all dogs want, love and attention and before we lost Leo, he had 5.

He would sleep under the coffee table or under the baby's crib and it wasn't odd for him to go get some quiet time for a few hours, in the house, so when he was called for dinner at around 5:30pm and no Huck, at first we thought he might have been locked in the bathrooms or even a closet... tore the place apart, we're still in boxes as we've been here only 10 days, and then the unthinkable... did he somehow get out of the house?

Even if he did, he would sit outside the door as if to say "what the..?" But that happened once, in Brooklyn, in a building.

We look in the yard, calling him.

My wife runs outside, down the path and finds an older man who says he saw a schnauzer, around 4pm running down the path that led into street, which he ran across with heavy traffic slamming on their brakes giving him safe passage.

Huck had a 2 hour lead.

Created "missing" signs, printed dozens of them, grabbed a tape roller and staple gun, a high powered flash light and covered the Pasadena area with signs, walking everywhere calling for him. Nothing.

Huck was not an outside dog. This area is unknown to both him and us. Where could he go? There is little chance he would find his way back as he was not walked once. He had his own yard.

At about 4am, I come back.

My wife had called 911, was in touch with every shelter and all we could was hope someone picked him up.

At 7am, 10/17/07, my wife went to the humane society shelter.

Huck was brought in by the police.

He tried to cross back and was hit and killed by a car at 4:15pm.

We received calls and emails by those who were at the scene, one, who scooped him up and held him in her arms while he died. She told him that his family loved him and how beautiful his haircut was. He made no sounds, and just looked on in a state of shock, until he closed his eyes and died all of 3 minutes later.

Within 18 minutes we lost our beloved Huck.

We have had dogs in our lifetime, but have never lost them to anything but old age.

We now have lost 2, in 4 months, both to untimely and tragic ends.

I am numb as is my wife and it will take some time to understand how this can happen as we have lost so much in such a small time.

All I can say, is that Huck is back with Leo, who were inseparable.

I love you Huck and miss you.
