Unhappy In need of some assurance and maybe some advice.

Hello,
So I'm 19 and my dog who is now 10 years old has an ulcerated tumour. I've been extremely upset because i know i dont have the funds to pay for the operation which sadly costs 1000. The ulceration is very large and will not heal and now summers coming up and i know with the heat and flies its just going to get worse. I'm extremely upset cause I'm away at university and my dog is with my mom. I've been told by many that I should put him down but it feels so wrong cause he's always so happy around me, its heart breaking. does anyone have any advice for me? It would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Tracy

I was in a similiar situation several years back. We found a university that would do the next to impossible $5000 operation for a $1000 in monthly installments of $300. Look for a vet school/university and call to see if they will do it. You may have to drive a ways to get there, like we did, but it was definately worth it. Good luck

he should definately not be living outside. just as you pointed out - heat & flies. flies lay eggs that turn into maggots & eat away at the flesh. that could happen very soon.

the fact that he is happy around you has no bearing on his suffering, especially since you don't even live there

I agree with your friends, if you can't afford the surgery, then you need to stop the suffering.

here are some places you can try for financial help, but contact them ASAP

To put an animal down is always a hard decision to make. And it never "feels right", but you need to think of what's best for the dog. He has an open sore on his body, that is just waiting to become infected. The dog may be happy around you, but his health should not be allowed to deteriorate until he isn't "happy" anymore. If you can't afford the treatment, unfortunatley the only other option is to put him down. It is a hard thing to do, and you have my sympathy, but take it from me, you don't want to be in the catagory of people who wait too long and let their animals suffer needlessly, as this is done for the "good of the humans" not for the "good of the animal". Just know that you are not alone, many of us have to choose the kinder way to go for a beloved animal everyday. We all feel your pain. And I'm sorry to say, the longer you put it off, will not make it any easier. Keep in mind that it is what is best for your dog. Talk to your vet, he will give you your options. Best wishes.
