Default Tribute to a 9/11 K-9

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 11th,2001 there were more rescuers then just firefighters, police officers, paramedics and civilians that tried to rescue the victims of that horrific day. There were the Search and Rescue dogs a total of 250 to be exact. They searched for victims or remains and were responsible for finding many. These amazing dogs searched until their paws bled, they suffered heat exhaustion as well as other injuries. Yet after being tended to they eagerly went back to search some more. This brings me to the story of Sirius. A Port Authority K-9. Sirius,a 4yr.old yellow lab was one of 50 rescue dogs at the WTC site. When Sirius and his K-9 officer David Lim arrived Sirius was taken and crated in the basement of the South Tower with the rest of the K-9 unit. After securing him in his crate, officer Lim told him "You stay here boy,I'll be back for you."Officer Lim then went about getting people out of the building. When he got to about the fourth or fifth floor the Tower started to collapse and he was trapped.Lim was rescued about 3:00 that afternoon. After his rescue he made several attempts to get to the basement. The F.D and P.D were securing the scene and would not allow re-entry. Lim stayed at the site and kept tabs on the rescue. A week later he got the call. Sirius was found,he died instantly when his crate caved in on top of him. Under full honors, complete with prayer and a salute Sirius's body was removed from the wreckage. A flag was draped over his bag,all work and noise stopped and officer Lim and fellow officer John Martin carried him out together. So you see, there weren't just people who lost their lives that day but a special dog who was there to find and save them.So let us not forget these special dogs or the closier they brought to so many families. Sirius, you're a true hero and we shall NEVER FORGET how you gave your life while waiting to save others. May you enjoy your life on the other side of Rainbow Bridge. We didn't know you but we'll NEVER FORGET you!

I linked another story of a 9-11 dog on your other tribute thread. Thanks for posting them!

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

I watched a terribly sad program on the TV last night about the first responders and the terrible health issues many of them are facing as a result of exposure to the dust that was created when the towers fell. Does anyone have any information about how the rescue dogs fared in terms of their health in the aftermath of 911?

From what I've read all but a few have died..Most do to health issues just like the first responders..A lot of cancer and deaths from breathing issues.

How terribly sad. They were also incredibly brave heroes.

It truly is...I just what a video of an interview done today with the woman who was the very last person to be found alive in the Towers 27 hr.s later..She was pinned in the rubble next to one of the firefighters who didn't make it and she had used his coat to stay warm and the anchorman was wonderful he not only commented on the firefighter who lost his life but made it a point to mention that she was found by one of the rescue dogs and that they should not be forgotten as heroes either..A wonderful reminder of how much more the they bring to the lives us humans besides love and companionship!!..May they all be at peace on the other side of Rainbow Bridge!!
