Luna I'm glad you brought up Cocker Spaniels since they have the highest bite rate of all breeds including Pitbulls..If people would do their research instead of assuming that everything the media says is the gospel they would find that a large percentage of reported Pitbull attacks were in fact not Pitbulls at all..Many were other breeds that were mistaken for Pitts and they were everything from American Staffordshire Terriers,American Bulldogs, and Mastiffs to Boxers..The rate of Pitbull attacks is in fact much lower then the lying mainstream media reports it to be..They hear the story and rather then checking to make sure that was in fact what the breed was they just report what they were told.
A big part of the problem is that people tend to believe the media about everything they say and then fall into the mass hysteria they're trying to cause.I find it incredible how people so easily condemn what is quite honestly an extremely loving and gentle breed of dog but they don't condemn the ignorant humans that turn them into an aggressive animal.Akita's are known for being same sex dog aggressive in fact it's included in the AKC's breed standard for them..However when they've been bred from a bloodline that has excellent temperment and they're trained and socialized the way they're supposed to be it's almost never an issue. Both of my neighbors dogs that Seigi plays with are females and he has never played with a male dog but I can take him to the vet where the resident dog is a male and he does great with him..He's been approached by lot's of male dogs when we take him to the store to get his food and he's been approached by big and small male dogs and wanted nothing more then to play..The few times he's been approached by some nasty little dog who's owners found their little brats behavior amussing he's turned and walked away when he easily could've killed them with one bite..Do I hate the breeds those little monsters come from?..No,I hate the idiots that own them!!..People that feel such negativity about these poor dogs who are really victims themselves, victims of the human race have chosen to simply fall in line with the hysteria and myths and lies the media and the people who are pro BSL have created instead of thoroughly researching the facts..FYI,there are more Pitbulls as certified therapy dogs then there are any of the little breeds and that in itself should tell people something...BTW,that includes quite a few of the ones rescued from that sub-human Michael Vick!!!
http://network.bestfriends.org/6623/news.aspx
Both of these amazing dogs were used for dog fighting. One having belonged to that scum Vick..Try and tell the people they make smile that they're mean and vicious!!

I hate Michael Vick. the fact that football season started & you still see he's idolized by media & fans is mind blowing. I'm never buying Nike or Subway for incorporating one of satan's spawns.

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

I'm so sorry about Lance that's horrible that he died like that it he sounds like he was a wonderful beautiful dog but it was the owners fault that he is an irresponsible owner he obviously didn't socialize and train it properly pit-bulls are actually very sweet, loyal and loving dogs they just need a owner who knows what they are doing an experienced owner. They are just a misunderstood breed.

Well, there must be an awful lot of bad pit bull owners out there then.

I'm not in any way trying to condone what happened to Lance but I have come across enough ignorance and prejudice against the Jack Russell as a breed to last a life time. In my experience there are very few Jack Russells that can't be rehabilitated in the right circumstances and with the right owner. I can understand therefore that people can feel the same way about other breeds - especially ones that are outside my realm of experience.

Really? I've never come across a nasty JRT. I know there is sometimes a problem with same sex aggression but, on the whole they are very happy (if a little crazy) dogs. However, I've only had the Shortys. I don't know anything about the Parsons.

I've had Jack Russells all my adult life (shorties, not Parsons) and the number of people who have said "you can't keep a Jack if you have children
/birds /rabbits /furniture etc!" And I'm forever being told that they are constantly yapping, they're snappy, have no recall, will destroy your garden with their digging.
But my experience is the complete opposite. I guess it all depends on personal experience and for you and me our experiences of Jacks have all been good.

Lara has been known to dig a few holes when my back is turned. Our building superintendent calls her "the little gopher."

Hi,
I'm really sorry to about the dogs death and the circumstances around it and I understand that you are upset. However you then post comments about blood dripping from the mouths of pit bulls and owners making excuses.
I firmly believe that any dog breed can be dangerous and I've always said to be a dog owner is a great responsibility and as part of this responsibility you should: - Research the breed and know if it is the right one for you.
- Take the dog to proper dog training classes from a puppy even if you are the worlds greatest dog trainer -it helps with number 3
- Socialise your dog from a puppy with other dogs people and places
If you do this then you should have a happy well adjusted dog if you don't then you run the risk.
As for singling out pit bulls I have little experience of them so I wouldn't comment. I have however only ever been bit by one type of dog and only had my dog attacked by one type of dog and can you guess what breed it was on both occasions?
That's right, a Jack Russell.
I was bitten as a child when I was five years old by one when I was visiting my grand parents. I was in their garden when the neighbours Jack Russell came running into the garden and attacked me. This had the affect of making me scared of dogs for most of my childhood.
Luckily as I grew up I met lots of nice dogs and got over my fears. However the only time any other dog has attacked me and my dog again it was an unsupervised Jack Russell which came out of a garden when I was walking my rottie puppy - I complained to the owner who thought it was funny...
Again I don't blame the dog I blame the owner.

So sorry for both dogs and all people involved. This is never a easy thing to witness or move forward thru. I witness many aggressive dogs in my training classes. Which yes they have muzzles on. And yes it is a mix of many breeds. Im just glad these dog owners are doing something about it by getting training and improving on this behavior.
Hunter and I have witnesses dog bite first hand. Thank goodness I found and got Hunter to a trauma vet quickly, who saved his life. I tell you it was a nightmare I dont wish to repeat. I came away from it knowing to be awhere of all dogs around me, and watch, and look at all behavior signs good or bad, and be ready to react.
Hunter was attacked on a beach, we were out of town on vacation, and it was his second birthday, not the birthday present I had planned for him.
One fact the vet told me that saved his life. Most dog attacks happen in camp grounds and beaches.

Toronto is now talking about revoking the ban. I think it is an insane idea but, so be it. I have already gotten pepper spray and a police-like baton which I will carry whenever my girls are out. Should a pit bull (or any other dog for that matter) attack my fur kids, I will not hesitate to do EVERYTHING in my power to repel the attack. Ban me if you like. I don't care. I will NOT lose another dog to a pit bull.

This thread has caused a lot of arguments amongst the members and while everyone is entitled to their opinion all the disagreement about those opinions leads to fighting and insults..It has also led to a lot of breed bashing both on the Pitbulls and the smaller breed dogs..Therefore I think it's in the best interests of the forum and it's members to close this thread!
