xtop........your post is REALLY good, informative, educated and factual.....but this thread is really old so may not get your message to the original posters.......I hope you hang around a bit, and share some of your knowledge and experience in up and coming threads though. Your insight could prove to be quite valuable.

I once told my SIL the same thing. She said she wanted a pit bull for general protection. They are actually tolerant of people from my understanding. However, I once encountered a pitbull who first seen me & gave a warning bark but then noticed & EYED my little boy. I have never been as scared of a dog. I can't even describe the feeling he emanated in me with his eyes & body language towards my son. I will never trust dogs with kids. Whether it be the small animal prey drive kicking in or whatever the case. I don't trust any dogs with kids as a general rule.

every dog has the potential to attack no matter what breed . I'm not sure you encountered a true american pit bull terrier or not since you said pit bull and that terms incorporates several breeds including the american pit bull terrier but you said the dog barked at you both and looked at your kid im going to assume you were close to your child so the dog was looking in that direction but he did not attack there not much info you posted about it so i will assume the dog was in its own yard or property and it barked when you were close and watched you . so the dog did what all dog owners want the dog to do and thats bark when some ones around . im sure you may have been scared i was not there nor did you put much info in your post but i will say you over read the situation and freaked out mostly do to the media putting its spin on the breed about being people killing animals. how ever the last part of your post i really like i will not trust any dog around small children that a great rule because no matter how good any dog is there still a animal

Luna I would but I don't think it counts since she's just a pretty piece of furniture.
Sorry for being so vague, Topdawg. This was a few years ago, and if memory serves it was an APBT. My then toddler son and I were walking out from our house to my car which was directly in front of our home. I only turned my head to the left as I closed our door and seen the dog 2 houses down, on the sidewalk, unleashed with a group of people. It barked at me, then noticed my son coming off the steps. It was then eying him. The owner<?> shushed him. The dog was stiff with his eyes following my son, not me. It completely ignored me once he spotted my kid. The dog owner was visiting the guy who lived at that house. He wasn't our neighbor. Not once did we walk by, or even direct our body towards their location. That dog wasn't neutral on neutral ground. My son never even glanced towards the dog. He didn't even notice it. I told my son VERY sternly not to run and to walk slowly to the car. I have no issue with any sort of bullies in general. I can say it was not the hype of the media, it was the dog & every bone in my body warning me.
I actually think apbt are great dogs if they are well taken care of. Before getting my newest dog, the apbt was one of the dogs on my short list of dogs I was thinking of. But the Akita ultimately won me over in every which way. Except for the blowing of the coat!...

well like i said every breed as bad dogs however the dog just barked and looked . im sure you may have been scared maybe you had a right to be maybe not . how ever the owner was wrong in not having the dog on a leash my dogs run free on 17 acres nearest neighbor or family that no the dogs .i take my american pit bulls terriers to the river and let them off there leashes note were we go is in the middle of no were and you have to have a jacked up truck to get in there so they run free at the river . when ever i take them lets say vet ect in public i use a lead for horses and choker collars so i have complete control over them ! i no i can get away with out having to have any thing on them since there trained for hog hunting and can be sicked on a hog and stop b4 they attack the hog. How ever i have enough education to no that the animal a power full breed so i take extra care to secure them when in public with the breed .never had them show aggression toward any one and the vet tech. love them when they come in . its funny last time i was at the vets a younger girl around 20 are so was petting my pit at the same time some thing come on tv about pit bulls and she stated you cant trust a pit bull there all man killers and when they see stranger they attack them with out warning the whole time she was petting i simply stated to her dont you think your incorrect on what you just said since for the last 10 min or so you have been petting american pit bull terrier and been saying how you liked him and how sweet he is she got up and walked to the other side of the room to the front desk and asked them if they could put a mussel on my dog . the person at the desk kinda laughed and asked me to come back gave shot and stated the women wanted my dog musseled so it could not bite any one since it was a pit bull

You wouldn't think that if you had to pick her poop up out of the yard.

LOL! Hey I thought of you yesterday when I was doing poop pickup! It was freezing out & wondered how the heck you do it in the winter. I only walked 1/2 the yard before I gave up. It didn't help that it had rained HEAVILY the night before. And I hate having leaves on the ground..they camouflage Wrigleys poop..Kumas I can spot a few feet away. lol

It's pretty easy. I trained all of my dogs to go WAY out back by the hedge row. When it gets to where I have trouble walking w/o stepping in it, I grab a shovel and throw it over the bushes into our empty lot that we bought so we don't get neighbors.
