You're definitely going to want something short that will carry if you have to shout it across an open field. One syllable would be good. Like Kate, Babe, etc.

Some of the other answers are correct. A working dog name should be short and not sound like any of the common commands that you would give a dog. Avoid long names unless you will shorten them in field training and while hunting.Common commands for a water dog: "back, whoa, stay, sit, heel, fetch, give, bird, mark, steady, down". So avoid words that might rhyme with these.Names I have used for hunting dogs: Molly, Maple, Dutch, Moose

Bound's hubby here:Even though Labbies are pretty smart, you should still keep their names short. Restrict the names to two or three syllables. It's easy for the dog to remember. Also, avoid names that sound like punishments such as "Noel" and "No". Personally, my vote for a chocolate Lab is Hershey or Cocoa. As a footnote: do not expect your lab to act like a docile dog until she's about four. Good luck.

Once you see the dog, you will be able to name her. Each animal kind of lends itself to a specific name. I have a dog named Jo-jo, and she's as goofy as the name implies. Check out the dog and see what comes to mind. Having said that, how about "Duck" or "Goose"? She'll be a water dog, right?Congrats on the dog.

I once called a dog "Stay" but he got very confused during training, I kept saying "come here Stay" and he didn't know what to do. But seriously get the pup and don't name him for a week watch his character and pick something that suits him. If all else fails call him "Yahoo"
