Smile 2 Aussies

I have 2 Australian Shepherds (full/regular size). The male is a big, black tri (black with white and copper accents) named Bronx after the gargoyle dog from the 1990's disney afternoon cartoon.

The female is a petite (no, not a mini by any means) blue merle beauty named Valkyrie after the warrior women of Norse mythology.

Both were named after protectors because they are just that: protective.

Bronx looks much more fierce than he actually is. He's a big, furry, lovable teddy bear. Val, on the other hand, is just as lovable, gentle, and would walk through fire if her little boy is on the other side.

They will be parents in about a week.

Well..

Murphy the beagle (and we think mixed with eskimo dog) was a stray, and all the people at my roommate's work called her Murphy Brown, so he kept the name Murphy.

Merlin, his corgi... well, when we went to look at the litter (about 5 weeks old), he so greatly resembled the golden hamster my brother had as a child, i immediately blurted out MERLIN and it stuck.

Blossom is my dalmatian mix. I don't know why I picked Blossom. I guess I thought she had a blossoming personality. Plus it was easy to put with her name she had from her other owners, which was Summer. I still call her Summer Blossom if she's bad.

Roofus is my OES, my baby boy... I waited seven years to get him! I saw Bill & Ted's excellent adventure and decided Roofus (not rufus) would be a great name for a sheepie. I was right.

Popper is my beagle/cattle dog mix. We named him that because when we got him at 6 weeks, he had just been wormed and his belly was so round and fat with those things he looked like he was going to pop! Everyone thinks we named him popper because he jumps a lot. We just smile and nod.

Here are my dogs names and how they got them.

Hiro- 4 year old male Akita. I wanted to give him a Japanese name because he's a Japanese Akita. And since he is trained in personal protection I wanted it to sound strong. And no he isn't named after the character from the tv show. I was just looking up names and Hiro seemed to fit him best

Falak- 6 year old male Anatolian Shepherd. Falak was given a Asian/Indian name for the same reason Hiro was given his. Falak mean Heaven/sky and it just fit his personality.

Sebastiaan- 2 year old male Belgian Tervuren. I wanted to give him a strong Belgian name and had always been a fan of the name Sebastiaan.

Mouse- 8 year old male Welsh Corgi/Australian Shepherd mix. When we rescued him his name was Chucky and I personally hated it. Since im not too used to "smaller breeds" and he's one of our smaller dogs I thought it would be cute to name him Mouse. He caught on quick to his new name and it just fits with his huge ears lol.

Rosie- 5 year old female Basset Hound/ Shar Pei mix. Rosie is just simply named after her dark fawn/red color. When the rescue got her she had no name and they called her Rose. I simply liked Rosie better and it such a sad past I wanted her to have a happy sunny sounding name for the future.

Hoot- 3 year old male Lab/Blood Hound. I guess you could look at his name and guess why he is named this LOL. Ever since Hoot was puppy he has always been extremely vocal howling and gargling all the time. He also just looks like a down home country dog. And Hoot just seemed to suit him.

Stone- 9 year old male Lab/Rottweiler. If you read my intro you would know Stone has a disfigured face with one eye because as a puppy he was shot in the face. When the rescue got him they tried to give him a soft name and called him Sweetie though he really wasent. The name just never stuck and when I brought him home my son who was a big fan of wrestling said for some reason he reminded him of Stone Cold Steve Austin lol. Stone stuck because of his size and his looks. But all these years down the road I figure maybe we should have stuck with Sweetie LOL.

Whopper and Wookie- 1 year old Saint bernard/ Bernese Mountain Dog mixes male and female. Whopper and Wookie came with their names from their original owners who dumped them at the shelter. I know the names are a bit dorky but they fit each dog. They will stay named Whopper and Wookie .

Poodle- 6 year old female Dalmatian. Lol in my defense I did not name her! My good friend who was her original owner LOVED the movie The Truman Show and when he got her as a puppy decided to named her after the Dalmatian from that movie. After he passed away from cancer I didn't have the heart to change her name. She is our little peice of him strange name and all lol.

Airhead- 4 year old male Beagle/Dachshund. Airhead really isn't stupid thats not why he got his name. He actually came to the shelter named Stupid because his original owners would not take the time to train him. And so since he couldn't train himself to go outside he was dubbed Stupid. Really he is is smart just ditzy. I know Airhead isn't much better than stupid but it fits lol and its said with love.

Naomi- 11 year old female American Pitbull Terrier. Naomi came with her name from the rescue. It just fit our beautiful girl so we felt no need to change it.

Default Baxter

My 3 year old Sheltie-Corgi mix is named Baxter. That was his name when I got him from the Rescue Shelter in October of 2007. His foster mom told me his name when they got him was Buddy but she changed it. I'm glad she did -- he doesn't look anything like a "Buddy" but Baxter fits him.

Oddly enough, my sister had a cat named Baxter at the same time, so I called her to ask if it would bother her that I had a dog named Baxter. She said, "No, not at all. We'd have Baxter 1 (the cat) and Baxter 2 (the dog)". But she has since lost her loving Baxter (the cat) to cancer!

I have my own little nicknames for Baxter -- "Puppy" when he is being so exuberant and playful! (Although he is beyond the puppy age)!! And sometimes I just call him "Dog" which frustrates one of my granddaughters. She'll say to me (in her most frustrated tone of voice) "Grandma, he has a name!!!"

So my daughters and grandchildren and I all get lots of enjoyment out of having Baxter. It's funny, but Baxter will start wagging his tail, his ears will perk up and he begins to get all excited when he hears the grandkids start coming up the stairs and in the front door!
