Changing a pup's name after 6.5 months Ok?!
SHE IS NOW 6.5 MONTHS OLD.
I was contemplating 3/4 names during the FIRST few weeks we had her as a young pup (note: husband and I, no kids). Would changing her name now be a strain on her? If you were our neighbors, family and friends, what would you think of us doing such a thing having had her for the period of time we have?!
Thanks for your input.

I changed the name of a 2 year old bitch I adopted, I made the change the day I picked her up and she learned it quickly. So I know that dogs can learn new names... as far as what people will think, I guess it depends on your friends and family. The most important thing is doing the right thing for your family (including Koda/Calla). You need to do what you feel is right. I am sure she will learn the new name very quickly should you choose to change it.

If you ever decide to change her name use it as frequently as you can to call her attention or give commands...

Changing dog names
I think you can change a dogs name, we changed our dogs name when we got her from the rescue centre.
Like has already been said, use it often and make sure you only use it when being positive or giving praise never for anything bad and I think your dog should pick it up in no time.
As for what others will think, I’m sure most of them won’t care, but if they do, tough, it’s your dog, you’re the one that looks after them, your not abusing or causing your dog any harm so don’t worry.

I do rescue work for senior and special needs dogs and 99.9% of the time, we don't know what their name is so we rename them. As long as they can hear and are cognizant, they catch on quite quickly no matter what their age.
P.S. God bless you for rescuing your little girl.

To them their name is more of a command, you can change it whenever, really. The dog I had growing up, Spike, we got when he was a pup and I named him Spike, but he gained more names over the years and responded to all of them, such as: Spikey, Dog, Doggy, Dodge-E, Wild Thing, Spike-a-doggy, and many more. Granted they all seem to be related, to a dog they're probably completely different.

Hi again emerald,
Just replying to see if you’ve changed your dogs name and if so how it’s going.

Did your husband die or something? If it mattered then won't it matter now?

Dogs are generally animals that adapt easily. Changing her name shouldn't make a difference. However the important thing is to ensure that the name is associated with love.

I've changed a dogs name at a much older age than yours and it was fine. Cala is a good name. Good Luck!

Sorry, I forgot to check how old this thread is... My dog has an "official" name, but my husband also gave her a nickname, which he uses almost exclusively, instead of her "real" name. So I always call her one thing (Annie), and my husband always calls her another ("Girly"). She responds to both names equally well. That being said, I don't think you actually have to "change" your dog's name. You can each call her what you like best, and she will understand.
