How Do You Pick Your Pupīs Name?
As much as I love reading, teaching and advising on Dog training, behavior and nutrition one thing that I have a personal interest in is how people choose their pupīs names.
for instance when I brought my pup she used to bounce like Tigger from Whinnie the Pooh and so the kids decided she should be called Tigger, I wasnīt overly keen on the idea at first, but eventually it gre on me and the name stuck, then to add to the humour my dog walking pal was a fan of Only Fools and Horses and named his alsation Trigger.
You can imagine the looks and the smiles when we were in the fields calling Tigger and Trigger!
What makes you name your dog, and how do you go about finding the name?
I look forward to your responses!

Yes, this should be a fun thread! When we got our puppy, it took nearly a week to decide on a name...It finally came when a neighbor had a dog named Gibson, named after his fav guitar - well, my hubby has MANY guitars to choose from, and Kramer just seemed to fit! Most think we chose Kramer because of Seinfeld, but it's really from a guitar!!

Well, my story isn't very exciting. I adopted a dog from a no-kill shelter and they had been calling her Ginger because of her coat. Now, I'm a 6'1" guy and close to 3 bills so I couldn't picture myself calling out for "Ginger" so I re-named her Zoey. I don't know where Zoey came from as an idea but she looks like a Zoey so that's what it is.

I'm a big fan of mob movies and books, and I always liked the name Luca Brasi from the Godfather. Also, Luca was intensely loyal and dedicated to the Corleone family, and their watchdog, of sorts. I thought it would be neat if my dog really were that loyal and protective (though, of course, not horribly murderous!! ), and he has lived up to his name.

When I adopted my dog her name was "bb" (awful name!)
I wanted to change it to something more suitable so bb became brandy.
I think its important that people don't change a dogs name too much as to not confuse the little buggers

2 dogs here! The cocker/golden retriever mix I got while I was still working. (retired from Land's End about 2 and a half yrs ago) I passed a paper around to all my co-workers asking them to help me name my pup. One came up with Corky--which stuck (Corky the Cocker) and he is a corker (about the right color for a cork too) but, lol-----You should of asked about all the nicknames members have for their dogs too!! My 2 hardly ever get called by their real name. Corky is Corker-Porker (and he isn't even fat)--Sweet boy. Both my dogs ( the other one is a pure cocker and real name is Max--and have no story behind his name) Both have some of the same nicknames like
Honeybunny or Honeybunner----Sweetie Pot----Baby boy' lol, They are now 10 and 11 yrs old but still use the word baby! And Max hardly ever gets called Max--Usually Paxer (not even a word--only my word) or Pax Puppy.
Then there are those 'real endearing names' like Stinker or Terd! Lol, anyone else do this?!
FORGOT ONE AND I USE IT A LOT---------PUPPY BUGGER

You're all making me laugh, because I can so relate!! Kramer (the K Man, Krame Krame, Mr. PooPooHead...) is 10 now, and I also still praise him when he does his business...I can't help it!

Our puppy came with the name Peaches, which was alright but, the rest of the family didnt particularly like it. We spent 45minutes sitting on the floor playing with her, bouncing name ideas off of each other.
Finally, it came down to Dolly Parton or Ellie Mae (we live out in the country). So then it came down to which she responded to first. Hence, Ellie Mae.

I named all of my wolfkids Native american names.
Keeda Sable means The power of the wolf.
Wahya Noon means wolf. But i also call him mommy's boy.
Tala means stacking wolf. But i also call her little girl.
Tallie also means stacking wolf. She was a resuce. And her name was the same as Tala so i change it to Tallie.
Tom Alo. ALO means spiritual guide. I got tom from the breeder he has cancer and this will be his last little cubs. So i thought it would be nice to name one after him. Plus i call him little man.
Now th little guys
Cheyenne was already named when i got her at 10 weeks old and i just keeped the name.
Raven sidekick. I named him Raven because he is mostly black and Raven means Black. The sidekick came from him always being right beside me.He is also a resuce he will be going to him new home soon in Kentucky.

We found it a bit difficult naming our puppy. We all had different ideas as to what she should be called and since it was my daughter who really got the idea of a new puppy going, we decided to let her have a say and she wanted princess so we all finally agreed on the name 'Maya' which is Arabic meaning princess.

In a couple days I'll be getting my puppy.
I didn't have to even think up a name for him, though I do have some interestingly named pets (cats - Kapok {RIP}, Twiddles, Piggey, Jules Verne and rats - Rosie, Michelle, Guatamala, Zeno, Keef, Rodrigo and dog - Brady).
See, the breeder I'm getting my pup from has a three year old grandson and he started calling my pup Dragonese. He said the puppy (much larger than the rest of his siblings) looked like a Dragonese. He asked his Grammy if the new owner might keep the name and she said she doubted it. Well, who am I to change the name that a three year old gave him? So he's keeping the name!
I do have a feeling he might end up with Puff as a nickname, as in Puff The Magic Dragonese!

My puppy name!
I got my puppy when he was about 3 months old! It took me about a week to decide on a name. I orginally thought of Scabbs - when I got him he had a few circular scabs on the top of his head. I decided against that name because it seemed like I was teasing! I was having a hard time thinking of something that stuck and seemed to fit. I was playing with him on my bedroom floor (keep in mind that he is black with a white chest and a small white tip on his tail) and I looked over to my closet and saw a pair of my favorite sneakers. They are all black with a white tongue of the shoe and a white logo on the back and the name came to mind - Jordan (the brand of the shoe) - I immediately thought it was cute but couldn't picture calling him Jordan. Then I thought of JoJo - and that's what finally stuck :-)
It was a long process but I'm happy with his name now and I couldn't picture calling him anything else!
