Would love to try to name your dog, but I have a hard time with a 'blank canvas.' Can you tell the breed(s) and maybe seeing a pic. would help too!
And need to know the sex also!

I love the name "Tonka" - rugged and great play value. My next JR will be Tonka.

Wow, he has had that name a long time--Do you think it will be hard for him to get use to a new name. There is a thread/post in here somewhere asking about renaming--Maybe you have already seen it? Lol, can't say I blame you for not liking the name Roy though! First it automatically makes me think of the crappy dog food-Ol Roy! And it sure doesn't fit for a small dog like a min pin/chihuahua not to me anyway! I as usual can't tear myself away from this forum and am really late feeding my 2 dogs---So will be back later with some ideas. Lol, I'll bet Yogi can give you a lot of ideas---Min Pins as you prob. know are his life! Talk later.

Renaming an Adopted Dog
Even if you're adopting an adult dog who already has a name, you can give them a new name if you'd like. Pair the new name with the old one for a few weeks and then gradually move to just the new name. For example, if the dog is currently named Rexy and you'd like to name him Cuddles, call him RexyCuddles for a few weeks, then just start leaving off tthe Rexy part!
Some people suggest that the new name should rhyme with or sound similar to the old name to make it easier for the dog, but this is unnecessary. When you rename a dog, the dog remembers the new name because of positive associations – interactions associated with the name. The name itself is meaningless, making it just as easy for a dog to learn the name “Jack” as “Sir Lancelot.” Feel free to rename a dog whatever you like.
If you know the dog’s old name, the best way to rename a dog is to follow the old name with the new one for a week or so. For example, if the dog’s old name is “Barker” and the new name is “Theo,” call the dog by saying, “Barker Theo,” stressing the last name. As you praise and pet the dog, use the new name repeatedly and exclusively. Use phrases like, Theo’s a good boy! and Does Theo want a treat? If the dog looks away, call his familiar name, and when you have his attention, repeat the question using his new name. Many dogs will learn to respond to the new name in just a few days.
You might be forced to rename a dog because the original name is unknown. In this case, associate the new name with positive attention as above, and repeat the name often while having direct eye-to-eye interaction. The dog will learn to pay attention quickly if his or her new name comes with attention, praise, petting, playing, treats, and meals. To get the dog’s attention, you may have to whistle or clap. Once the dog is looking at you, use his or her new name lavishly and enthusiastically.
Dogs are intelligent animals with a wide emotional array. They are loyal and protective, and they can become jealous, excited, nervous, happy, and depressed. Just like people, every dog has a different personality. When you rename a dog, be patient if your animal companion takes a little longer to come around. Dogs that have been abused or displaced or those that are high strung by nature might require more time to make the associations. Persevere with positive reinforcement, and your pooch will catch on!
How to Rename a Shelter Dog
If you recently adopted a shelter dog, you may want to give your new family member a new name. Especially, if your new pet was renamed when they were brought to the shelter or Animal Care & Control center.
.Difficulty: Moderately EasyInstructions.Things You'll Need:
•treats (string cheese or bits of hot dog are perfect)
•cheerful voice
•a friend
Step
1Stand in large room (your living room is fine) with a friend. Each of you should stand on either side of your dog.
Step
2Call your dog using his/her new name. For example, say "Murphy!". (Say the name is a positive and friendly tone. Don't scream.) As soon as the dog looks at you, say the word "YES!" in a very cheery and upbeat tone. Then, offer your dog a treat as a reward.
Step
3Next, have your friend call your dog. Follow exactly the same process. As soon as the dog makes eye contact with your friend after he/she says your dog's name, have your friend say the word "Yes!" and then give your dog a treat.
Step
4Increase distance and improve recall reliability. Continue to move further apart from your friend so your dog has to make a greater commitment to come to you or your friend. Practice this "name" game constantly. Try out new rooms, move to the yard, etc. Eventually, you should try this at a dog park or where there are more distractions.
Step
5Add on to your training. Once your dog comes to you reliably, add on another step before he/she receives a treat. For example, call his/her name, then once you dog comes to you, have him/her sit before rewarding with a "Yes!" and treat.

"Twerp"???? Dictionary definition - someone regarded as weak and contemptible!
I bet inside that Min Pin sized body there's a mastiff trying to get out so how about a big dog name:
Thaddeus - Brave
Titus - of the giants

Do you really want to change the dog's name?
Looked into the name Roy, found two different histories..
One said it means King and the other said it means red, both said the name was Gaelic in origin. It is really not such a bad name.
I like Strider.

Oh, chomper. I love it! Nice choice!
Wasn't there a character named Chomper in that "Land Before Time" movie?

Good choice!
Sounds like a real "big dog" name - and I'm sure that is just what he is on the inside. It's only his body that is small.
