Breed rescue organizations? Especially if you have very little kids (babies and toddlers) an adult dog might be easier to integrate into your family. Puppies and little kids can be a difficult mix sometimes. A lot of times the rescues will have an adult dog, already trained and housebroken and used to kids, who had to be given up by its family because they were moving or someone got sick or allergic or no one had time for it anymore.
Not all backyard breeders are bad, per se. We got our Siberian Husky from a woman who had only one female dog, would only breed every two years, and raised the puppies in a house, with her family. I think we got a more well- rounded, socialized dog out of the deal then going for a breeder with impressive pedigrees and kennels and show ribbons. If you aren't planning on breeding and showing a puppy from healthy, registered parents from someone who breeds responsibly who has been raised to be a family dog I would take another look at the backyard breeders, maybe visit a few to get a feel for them and their animals, and go from there.
oh, and some name ideas: durango, goober, frenzy, rascal, kirby, marleybone, skeezix, topsider, wheedle
. . . hope this helps
