Customer Review: Health Food for Dogs
I have an 8 yr old yorkshire terrier that has had problems digesting other foods. Most of the store bought foods made him ill and he could not even tolerate Science Diet. The vet recommended Canidae, telling me that it was the only food he feds his dogs. Fortunately, there was a pet store in my neighborhood that carried the product. My dog started on Canidae when he was less than 1 yr old and the digestion problems disappeared. (I'm attributing that to the lack of corn and soy fillers, along with the addition of digestive enzymes in the food). Recently, I moved to the east coast and Canidae is not available in local pet stores. I put my pet on Iams and the digestive problems have resurfaced. Blood tests now show that he has abnormal liver levels (but not cancer). I am now giving him an antioxidant and vitamin e daily, as prescribed by his new vet. I spoke to her about Canidae, which also has vitamin E in the formula. I truly believe that the nutrients in Canidae helped keep my dog healthy and I am switching him back. Canidae is a wonderful product and my dog loves the taste.

If some thing is making your dog happy you should continue doing that thing but there are some thing to keep in mind they are
1) When I chose a dog food, I chose one high meat content. I want to see preferably at least 2-3 out of the top 5 ingredients be meat or meat meal (first ingredient must be!). Meal is simply the meat with the moisture removed.
2) I want to see higher quality grains, such as barley, brown rice, and oatmeal, instead of seeing wheat and corn. Or an alternative starch/carbohydrate such as potatoes or sweet potatoes.
3) I don't want to see any byproducts.
4) I don't want to see a lot of fillers.

After all of the pet food recalls, I wouldn't trust any tinned food. I trust very little of the dry food on the market although there are some good ones out there if you do your research.

I've been home cooking for my girls for years and their diet is supplemented with an all natural organic human grade kibble. Both of my girls are way healthier than the other dogs in my building who all seem to be suffering from either cancer, obesity, diabetes, skin and allergy problems, etc. I highly reccomend a home cooked diet. However, do your research first and choose a recipe that is palatable to your dog and meets his/her nutritional requirements. It is well worth the time and effort.
