Dating back to Colonial days, sporting dogs were a part of life in America, both for hunting, and for the pleasure of owning a pet whose natural instincts and behavior were a constant source of pride and enjoyment. This program is designed to present an overview of popular American bird dogs, and to illustrate how they have been enjoyed as companion hunting dogs, show dogs, and field trial performers. In those different capacities, these beautiful animals have enriched our lives for generations. Essential to the successful ownership of a dog is the selection of one whose temperment and talents match the goals of the owners. Through live-action and historical visuals, the program focuses on the qualities and characteristics that make sporting dogs distinct from other breeds, and serves as a guide for the selection and appreciation of the bird dog.
