This is an old article, but I think it is important since I see these Greenie displays everywhere...

CNN.com - Owners: Dog treats killed our pets - Feb 15, 2006

I would suggest Flossies instead of Greenies or edible Nylabones. Flossies are a beef tendon shaped in a spiral. They are completely edible and aren't treated like rawhide. They are made by Merrick and a little on the expensive side, but a great alternative to Greenies or Nylabones. They can be purchased on dog.com and at many of the stores that carry the higher quality dog foods.

Default I love greenies

I love Greenies like this... my dogs think they're fabulous and I don't feel guilty giving them to them because they're healthy and make their breath smell good. But, they're really expensive. Does anyone have any tips on where to find Greenies on sale? Coupons?

Exclamation

I did some research on Greenies about a year ago...and I have to say that I would never EVER give my dog a Greenie, or any of the other brands that make similar products that are just like Greenies.

Greenies are NOT digestible for dogs. Infact, dogs do not have the proper enzymes in their digestive system to properly digest Greenies. To anyone that does or has given their dog a Greenie, you may have noticed that after they have ingested a Greenie, they're poop is full of green little hard chunks...Greenies!

Take a look for yourself, it is not hard to find stories on the internet from people that have lost their dogs due to Greenies causing fatal bowel obstructions! Many dogs have had to have emergency surgeries to have chunks of Greenies removed from their intestines!

A package of Greenies will advertise how wonderful they are and how good they are for your dog...not true! There are hundreds of much safer dog treats out their for our dogs, that have way more nutritional value in them than Greenies.

Even a small chance that supports that they are NOT safe, and even after reading just one of the many stories about the harm that Greenies have caused someone else's dog...is more than enough reason for me to never, ever give my dog a Greenie!

that is very scary because I have been feeding my dog greenies for a super long time and he has a big bump on his side I don't think it is connected but I just feel so bad seeing my dog like that

Default You've got to look at all sides

I love my dog Ella Jane. I would NEVER give anything to hurt her. She is my world! But I look into anything people say and don't just take their word for it and this is what I found. The CNN.com article cited above came out on February 15th and the Co-Owner of Greenies came out with this statement on February 24th:

"The risk of a fatal incident using his product is less than one in eight million, while dogs whose dental health is neglected have an 80 percent chance of developing periodontal disease that typically shortens their lives by 3-5 years."-http://www.doggienews.com/2006/02/greenies-strikes-back.htm

Later that year Greenies had reformulated their whole product. In November they announced their new formula:

"The company says the new formula is more easily digestible, with a digestibility rate of 95.7% as compared to 80-85% digestibility of typical dry dog food. The new formula also includes a blend of high-quality proteins, vitamins and minerals, is softer so that dog teeth will sink in making them more cleaner." - DoggieNews: Reformulated Greenies Launched Today

With this news I'm not going to take away Ella's favorite chews and I have even started giving her their new Greenies Pill Pockets. They disguise the Pill and she thinks she's getting a treat. This is a great company and they've got mine and all of my friend's votes.

I have to agree with EllaJane02. I've talked to my vet a few times about Greenies and he has assured me that they are a safe AND healthy treat for dogs. My dog Hailey LOVES them and the only way I can get her to take her medicine now is if I give her a Pill Pocket!
