I would think that fresh meat that is a week out of date cannot be healthy. As for bags of dog food, I agree that they could go to shelters for immediate consumption.
Anything in my house, especially meat (unless it has been frozen) that is out of date gets thrown in the garbage. I stand by what I've always said: If I wouldn't eat it, my dogs aren't going to eat it either.

Meat a week out of date for a human and for a dog are two different things. that's why I feel dogs can handle raw meat. Their stomachs are designed differently so they can handle out of date/raw meats. I wouldn't go too far out of date but I wouldn't worry about anything up to a week out of date de-thawed as long as it hasn't been sitting out forever. As far as frozen meat more than a week out of date would be fine in my opinion.

Thank you! I should have checked Super Walmart - I did find those eggs there that are really high in omega 3 fatty acids. There is one 2 minutes from my work so I can get them at lunch time (I'm sure everyone at work will be thrilled to have chicken livers in the frig ) No Piggly Wiggly's here....

I was looking for info that would say 'aged' RAW meat is even better--more nutritious for the dog---I am sure it is but can't find the info on it right now! Below is some info I did find while looking and there are words I did in red to say that it is okay to give to dogs--no harm! All the info below I could not resist even though it is not just about aged meat. It is very interesting I think--explains some things!
Dr. Donald Ogden D.V.M. writes that commercial pet food (even the best known and most expensive brands) have had their nutrients altered, adulterated, devitalized and destroyed by heat, processing, coloring, preservatives and other chemicals. Feeding your animal such food on a regular basis causes waste-toxins to accumulate in the blood, lymphs and tissue which contributes to a weak immune system and renders our pet susceptible to chronic diseases.
Jesse Dallas writes that Processed foods and drugs have seriously depleted the natural vitality and immune systems of many pets. Dogs and cats are anatomically very different to humans. Their intestinal tract, for example is only about half as long as a human's, and food is therefore processed and assimilated very differently. Whereas large amounts of red meat can cause cancer in humans, a lack of raw red meat in an animal's diet can lead to serious health problems.
Animals, like humans, require the enzymes, amino acids and other nutrients in the raw meat in order to stay healthy. Many skin and coat problems are a direct result of a lack of raw animal fat in the diet - fat which humans often believe is bad for their pet. Animals need at least 30% raw fat, and their systems are not designed to handle cooked meat or cooked fat. In the wild, a panther or jackal does not barbecue, grill or smoke its prey. It definitely does not walk to the local supermarket to buy dry food either. Yet most pet owners recoil at the thought of feeding raw meat to their dog or cat, concerned about bacteria or parasites. However, dogs and cats don't get salmonella poisoning because their digestive system is so acidic
(or at least it should be) that it kills everything. THIS IS WHY A DOG CAN BURY A BONE AND DIG IT UP TWO WEEKS LATER AND EAT THE ROTTING MEAT.
Want to say here also that the meat that my stores are throwing out are 2 days old--not spoiled but if was would not harm the dog--although I would want this meat right out of the refrigerated store case and not stuck in a hot dumpster! The 1 day old meat is still sold at a reduced price and I try to get that but you have to be there early and at just the right time when it gets marked down and put out for sale in the meat case. Lol, it goes like hot cakes! This is still good even for humans.

You may not have Piggly Wiggly but what ever grocery stores you frequent----You could see if they would save the livers for you and if you want to try the raw chicken necks--May save them for you to. My store saves them in the plastic containers I mentioned, in their freezer in back and when I go get groceries--once a week--I just ask if they have any yet for me. Just remember though, not to feed only about 10% of the meat for the day in organ meats. ('cept could possibly feed a little more in the heart meat) Also Walmart (and other stores) has chicken hearts and gizzards which you could feed--organ meats. Be sure to cut up the gizzards in bite size pieces. Of course I feed raw but if you have to cook them--just lightly simmer in water and again use the 'broth' for whatever for your dog.
Could boil and mash some potatoes and use the broth to mash with and/or as a gravy --Add to a chicken meat meal along with about 10% of the hearts/gizzards. Could also cook some (frozen) green beans (I prefer frenched green beans) or other veggie like cauliflower. I would say carrots and you can, but it is best to have 1 above ground veggie and 1 below ground veggie together--Put in a mini-blender (cooled a little 1st) and pulverize and add to the mashed potatoes. (Read the post I just did above on the raw meat for some interesting things about raw versus cooked etc.)

Sorry Todd. Meat a week out of date, unless it is frozen is garbage - pure and simple. Would you eat it? If not, don't expect your dogs to eat it.

Am I a dog? No...
Dogs have different stomachs and a differing internal structure than we humans do. They can handle raw meat for one, which most humans cannot, and they can also handle meat a week out of date. I know many do not like this comparison, but in the wild wolves or other wild dogs occasionaly will eat roadkill or animals that have been dead for up to a week or more. Again, dogs have stomachs that are quite a bit more acidic than a human's as well as a shorter intestinal tract. I know that you don't believe in the dog/wolf comparison but you are comparing dogs and humans yourself here but saying that if a human shouldn't eat it, a dog shouldn't.
