Default Unanswered: Anti-pull harness humane?

Are mesh anti-pull harness' humane to use? We just got one for Gracie and it works like a charm... She usually pulls and tugs which takes away from enjoying our walks.... But I need to know that it's not hurting her...???

I know when we used one for my father's mad springer cross it worked like a dream and the dog contlnued to wag his tail, with his ears up and a daft grin on his face with no signs of discomfort at all. I wonder if it is reasonable to compare the sensation to that of learning a new way of doing something that isn't the same as your natural way. Not speaking from experience but imagine someone who has been struggling to play golf, holding the club the way that feels right and making a total mess of the situation. Then the club pro comes along, shows you how to stand and how to hold the club how to move and how to hit. At first everything feels strange but when you see the effect you know it is right. In a similar way the harness shows your dog how to walk.

By mesh, do you mean one that is made of a kind of fabric? Both of my Jacks wear those and they are the most comfortable ones I've ever come across.

Mesh harnesses are completely safe and comfortable for the dog. It just gives you better control over their chest area, where dogs harbor most of their strength. If the harness was hurting the dog you'd most likely hear some whining or whimpering but if the dog is happy then no worries! Hope that's helpful

It is a very soft fabric, and looks comfortable... I read online somewhere that some of the harnesses are considered inhumane and I wanted to make sure this was okay and not hurting her. She does not whimper or cry... she just walks a whole lot better... no tugging or pulling. THANK YOU!! I'm getting ready to walk her now, and I wanted to get some thoughts on this.

Thumbs up

Yep. Sounds fine to me. Glad it's working so well for you! I think it's completely humane. Things like pincher, choker, or electric colars are another story...

Smile Yes they are

I would have to give a resounding yes! I have had many dogs and used mostly the standard dog collar and the old choker chain when I walked them. Today I purchased a harness and used it to walk my dog. He did not tug or pull to get ahead. We stayed in step for the short though important test, once around the block. Finally, he walked with his head held up, front shoulders and body square. This is the most comfortable I have seen any dog, except when I walked them on a show lead. Next comes the acid test, will my six and eight year old be able to walk with him without issue? I'll let you know.

Harnesses regardless if mesh over the head or walkthrough are the most humane way to train a dog/puppy whilst walking. Unlike training "collars" which have spikes or chokers ,the harness will not hurt or harm any dog it mearly allows the owner to control the dog in a centered area of the body without hurting them or causing harm to the throat by displacing the pressure more in the chest region... my vet actually recommends harnesses as do most vets now due to eliminating crushing syndrome which can occur in any dog but more common in smaller dogs from use of a collar on the smaller throat bones hence causing breakage of the bones, therefore the harness being safer and more humane.. sorry so long winded

Your dog would probably let you know if he thought it was inhumane. Just ask him.

Default Horgan Harness is very humane and works very well!

I highly recommend the Horgan Harness. I recently bought it and now my dog can't pull and it doesn't hurt her at all. It was very comforting knowing that a veterinarian created it. I recommended it to some of my friends and they bought it, now they can walk their dogs knowing that they can't be pulled. It is really an amazing harness... I definitely would recommend it to anyone with a dog. Just type in horgan harness in google and the website should show up. I hope you love it just as much as I do!
