Default Answered: Raw Diet.

I just wanted to let everyone know what great success ive been having with feeding my dog an organic raw diet. She is a totally different dog and the best part is she hasnt gotten sick at all since i started this!! That is huge because she got sick quite often when i was feeding her dry dog food. Ive actually had a lot of fun researching the different foods she can and cannot eat and watching her reaction when i give her something new.

Anyways, i just wanted to thank everyone on the forum bc it was bc of u guys i choose to go this route.

So i was wondering what are ur favorite recipes to use? Is there any certain food u use every time for a certain vitamin or mineral?

Great news!!!!! I believe I was one of the people who recommended you feed a raw diet, along with barb for one, because I knew it would help tremendously! So glad to hear this! Out of curiosity, what style of raw do you feed? Prey model bones and all, BARF, or some sort of combination? I feed raw chicken quarters most of the time (bone and all) and some pureed veggies, fruits, and several other ingredients. I also occasionaly use turkey thight, drumsticks, or pork ribs. Raw erggs too! Glad to hear you're having such sucess!

BTW: Which thread was this suggested to you in for what reason?

It was mention to me in several threads.. but mainly in the one i posted about my dog having a VERY sensitive stomach! I mean ive tried several different kinds of dry food and she would still get sick... even though there suppose to be no grain, all natural foods. Not that all dry dog foods are bad or anything! I just think a raw diet is better plus it gives her variety. I kind of do my own combination when i make her food. I've only done chicken and turkey so far for the meat and ive been using eggs a lot bc she LOVES eggs!! Then i just mix in several different fruits and veggies, usually 2 fruits and 4 veggies. She LOVES apples and strawberries!! She definitely loves her fruits, so i use those for her treats now too. Everything she gets is organic! I even made homemade peanut butter to but in her kong!

Ive been doing this for two weeks and i am so surprised how much healthier she looks and she hasnt had any diarrhea or anything!! The best thing probably is that she likes to eat now. She sometimes would go 24 hours without eating bc she just didnt care about her food. I mean shes never been that interested in food. Now she gets so excited when i start making her dinner, its really cute. Anyways, thank you so much!!

Do you feed raw bone as well or do you feed deboned or ground meats? Bone is very important for the phosphorus calcium ratio to be correct and balanced. If you don't choose to feed raw bone for whatever reason a substitute must be made such as ground egg shell or bone meal. Raw bone is great though. Not only does it provide necessary calcium but it does a great job of cleaning your dog's teeth too!

Also, be sure to blanch orpuree the veggies/fruits because this is the only way your dog will be able to fully digest them and capitalize on their nutritional content. Dogs are mostly carnivores and lack molars so they can't break the cell on veggies and fruits which is necessary to properly digest them. Pre crushing this cell by blanching or pureeing it with a blender or food processer is what you need to do. Remember though, dogs are carnivores so need only a small amount of veggies and fruits. Even carnivores east some veggies for one because they may eat the stomach content of their prey some of the time if their pray is a small rabbit such as a rabbit. I feed about 15-20% veggies and fruits but I believe this should be well under 25%. 15% is a great number toshoot for.

Do you feed organ meat? 10% of the raw diet should comprise of organ meats. At least half should be liver and the rest can be other organs such as kidney.

Good luck and I'm so glad this diet is working so well!

I am so glad your dog is happy and healthy with the new diet! I don't know if I gave you this link previously or not (as Todd mentioned--my name is Barb--the other part of the 'Corky/Max equation') but want to make sure you read post #6 especially as it mentions about not feeding fruit with other foods: About Feeding Fruits & Vegetables [COLOR="SeaGreen"]And if you haven't seen this thread before-you might want to read the entire thread. I would supplement with fish oil--note that fish oil depletes vitamin E so may want to supplement that too--just don't overdo the v. E as could be toxic-- and a multivitamin for dogs. I suggest you check out taurine and make sure your dog is getting it. Another suggestion--Check out the many threads in here in the Health and Nutrition section/forum ---Sure you will find ideas on what to feed, etc. in some of them! [COLOR]:-)
