The fact is when it comes to the amount of time Vet students get when it comes to nutrition is best left answered by Mr Vega not by anyone wanting to just jump on the band wagon and simply agree when in fact they do not know.
Being the resident Vet student he would be the person to simply just ask. Don't you think? At least with regards to the states...

Have to have my say here--esp. since this very topic is one of my 'pet peeve's' and I have stated this prob. several times before. My vet told me that she couldn't answer my questions because they only get a day or less schooling on the subject of nutrition/vitamins/supplements! And Mr. Vega if you can remember I think we discussed this before and you said something I think on the order of there was too much to cram in to your schooling to allow enough time on this subject. I don't have time right now to try and find this thread/posts but may look later. And it is still in my mind as---Pharmeceutical companies are not promoting prevention and want to sell their medicines instead-(and that is putting it mildly as to what I could say about these greedy so and so's!!!)---And who is promoting vet schools?! Who is using propaganda??!

That was the point of my post. Let Mr Vega clarify instead of us just assuming or guessing.

Barb, I have to agree with you 100%. He did talk about having a lot to learn so there wasn't that much time for nutrition.

How do you know what Mr. Vega is learning? Times change and nutrition has come to the forefront. My vet who graduated about 10 years ago, knows a great deal about dog and cat nutrition. He was very helpful in guiding me with home cooking for my dogs. He also recommended the best dry foods.
There may be some vets who don't take nutrition seriously. I would venture to guess that those vets are losing patients. Pet parents are much more educated now. We have more knowledge than we ever did before.
I know for a fact that nutrition is a big part of what vets learn in Canada. Before you condemn Mr. Vega and what he is being taught, at least give him a chance to tell us what he is being taught about animal nutrition.

I find many of our local vets (and the RSPCA) "highly reccomend" certain food brands, they vary dramatically from vet to vet though..........funnily enough their reccomendations are ALWAYS what is sitting on their shelf........if they have more than one brand, they can never tell you which one of the two (or more) are best, they are all as good as each other.............corporate sell outs perhaps???

I guess we are very lucky to have an informed vet as far as current nutrition. The head vet (who is probably in his 50's) always sends out a Christmas letter each year and this year's was about the value of grain free foods such as EVO and Wellness core. One of the other vets who we normally see has been very helpful with advice in increasing Tucker's protein intake and has helped friends of ours in home cooking their dogs' food. But I think that lots of vets are still giving advice based on what food they happen to carry - many people we know seem to just accept that recommendation or buy what is most advertised on TV.

If vets were taught so much about nutrition I can't see why they would recommend feeding foods like IAMS, Science Diet, Purina, etc. I know you don't feed these foods. I'm not saying all vets are this way, I'm just saying there are many that are. I believe vets that are very knowledgeable about nutrition get the info from more personal research like myself and many of you guys or mentor a vet who knows alot about nutrition. I don't think they neccessarily learn much about nutrition in school or most vets wouldn't recommends the poor foods I mentioned earlier.
