Unanswered: Need help with identifying the stray we took in.
We need a little help identifying the stray we took in. We have only found one picture of a dog comparable to her. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I would say Cairn/Yorkie - her coat is more like a Cairn but she has the size and shape of a Yorkie.
She is a lovely little girl. How sad that she could stray and not be claimed.

I was thinking mainly Carin Terrier but the ears are so big on your dog. Then I came across this: Podengo Portugueso Medio Information and Pictures, Medium Portuguese Hound Info
Be sure to scroll all the way down on that page as there is another page of pics to click on there. Also don't forget to read the description, etc. How tall is your dog--top of shoulder down? weight?

It is terrible someone would abandon her. We put out posters (huge 11x17 posters) with her picture on them, contacted animal control, checked Craig's List. All to no avail.
I notice a HUGE resemblance to the Plushcourt! Ears are shorter, but the stance and tail are the same, along with the fur. The head is rounder, perhaps she may be a Plushcourt/Chihuahua.
The only argument I have against the Cairn/Yorkie is that their heads are more round and I believe their fur is soft. Sophie's fur is very wiry.
Sophie is 9" tall at her front legs, from floor to the top of her back. She is 16" long, excluding her tail. She is quite muscular, but still weighs less than our long haired silver tabby. I have to guess on her weight right now, I would say no more than five pounds. Since we took her in she has gained a lot of muscle weight.
She is ferocious in play with out British Lab (45lb) and they get along great. So we figured we would keep her since it has been over 30 days since someone abandoned the poor girl.
I knew this might be difficult. I'm going to see if we receive any more guesses about her breed.
Thank you.

Is the Plushcourt a breed or the name of the breeder of the breed I mentioned-the Portuguese Ponengo!!?? See this link: Dog Breed Info Search Results

Anyway, the breed I mentioned is the same as the one you are referring to as the plushcoat.

I am ignorant as to the names of breeds... I see what you are saying... that is the Kennel's name... the dog is Podengo...
Yes, I feel a bit dumb. :-)
Yes, that is why I mentioned it. My apologies Corky/Max, I should have mentioned that you found that. I am very thankful for your help!
And thanks to cigwyllt for bringing it to my attention as well.

I hadn't thought of a Podengo - they are so rare that they don't really feature on my radar very often.
Plushcourt is actually the name of the kennels here in the UK. I have a friend who has visited there with a view to putting her name down for a pup in the future. She is absolutely besotted with them!

Yes, I do see some similarities to the Podengo.
I don't have over 50 posts, so I cannot post the link... but I just searched under Google for Podengo and found a lot of similarity.
For some reason a lot of people think she is some sort of Jack Russel... I have never seen a Jack Russel Picture that looks anything like her.
I am sure that she is mixed with something.
We love her, that's what matters the most. I just wish the one picture we found that looked like her had more information. It was an uncanny resemblance.

No, she is not a Jack Russell - although that's not to say there is no JR in her make up but I don't see JR in her at all and I look at 100 or so JR photos every day!
The thing that makes me question whether she could be a Podengo is the rarity of the breed. I find it hard to believe that someone would spend the huge amount of money on her then not do the sensible thing and have her chipped.
Of course it could be that she is a simple mutt - not every dog can be identified - she could be the product of two mixed breeds who themselves are of mixed parentage. The similarity to any breed could simply be coincidental.
Doesn't make her any less beautiful or deserving of a loving home. I have a beautiful old dog with no distinctive traces of anything in her. She was given away free to a good home after being found wandering in farmland so cost me nothing. But she is worth more than any money - no one could make me an offer for her because I love her and she is mine!

Exactly... We are just curious... we love her. Never liked small dogs much, but she plays with the big dogs, fetches, is trainable, lovable, gets along with the mean old British Lab (they constantly play tug of war and he lets her win sometimes, he is very gentle with her.)
I cannot post links, but here is what I found... Australian Terrier... looks just like her...
And again, I thank everyone for their help. Maybe someone will post something new after the holiday weekend.

Here is a pic of an Australian Terrier. Pretty close resemblance, especially if this is boy and Sophie being a girl.
It's only a mild stretch when you look at that fur! <chuckle>

The link I gave you in my 1st post:Podengo Portugueso Medio Information and Pictures, Medium Portuguese Hound Info has many pics and description, etc--a couple pages of pics. Be sure to scroll all the way down as the ads are in middle and are misleading. One of the pics also reminds me a little of a chihuahua too.

Now I'm on the fence between Podengo/Chihuahua or an Australian Terrier/Chihuahua.
Page two on the link you gave me has even closer resemblances. It is mind boggling when it comes to figuring this out.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration!

The sheer rarity and price of the Podengo makes me think this is not a Podengo. On the balance of statisics I would go for a wonderful mix that has produced this girl rather than a Podengo. But, if this was a different sort of question, "bet you can't guess what this dog is", I would agree that she is a Podengo.
I'm sitting firmly on the fence here LOL!
