Default Unanswered: NEW PUPPY Dying?

Got a so called maltipoo yesterday from breeder. Had no problems until we got home. Has the most foul death smellling poop and runny eyes and cough. She said she dewormed her could that make her poop foul? Is there a type of puppy food that would be good for me to try because she has the smell of death? Any suggestions. My kids just love her should I change her food wait a few more days and see if she quits coughing and foul poop or take her to the vet> Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'm not an expert or anything, but I have been looking up common puppy illnesses. I just got my own puppy 6 days ago, so I got curious. Did the breeder have a lot of them in the same kennel? Is it a harsh hacking cough? If so it could be kennel cough. It can easily spread when dogs are in close contact with each other. I would suggest taking her to the vet. The best answers are there. You can never take the risk with a puppy. Good luck with your puppy!

Unfortunately I can 't post links. I'm not trying to frighten you. You can look up kennel cough or common puppy illnesses and can get information there, but the best bet is to take her to the vet.

How old is the puppy anyways? Did you see any papers stating that the pup had been dewormed?

I have been searching the net and my dog books but can't come up with an answer to all 3 symptoms in one thing. Can you contact the breeder and ask about the other pups and any info she can give you. Part of the problem could be if you changed dog foods too rapidly. What was the breeder feeding?

I have a lnk here that maybe you should check out:
CANINE PARVOVIRUS
Then there is kennel cough, pneumonia, and a lot of things. The foul smelling stools could be from not digesting a new dog food but there are other things too.

Best to see a vet if this has nothing to do with a change in diet! Actually my vet book states that a dog should be seen by a vet if it has a cough and runny eyes.

If the puppy was not in the best of health at time of deworming (hope if your breeder did this on her own--and he/she prob. did--that they didn't overdose, etc and knew what they were doing) there could be side effects but not too likely if done right and puppy was in good health--Deworming should not be done if not in good health.

All in all--See a vet and very soon if you decide to!! Some of these things are important to address now! Pneumonia can be fatal quickly for one thing!
Keep us updated as we worry about the little girl. Good luck!

And be careful she doesn't get dehydrated--which can happen easily too if having diarrhea!

I find that kind of strange that she wouldn't return any of your calls. Please keep us updated. I don't think I'll be much help with identifying, I'm not familiar with small breeds.

I'm sorry your pup is so poorly. You are definitely doing the right thing by taking her to the vet.

The breeder could be away for the day or too busy to answer the phone. What were conditions like when you bought the pup - were the puppies in the house, outside, in kennels? Could it be that it was a puppy mill?

You say you wonder if she is a "real" maltipoo - the truth is it is not a breed, there is no breed standard. She is a cross breed. No matter what line the so called "breeder" give you she is a cross breed and you have no idea when you mate two different breeds what you are going to get. She could be more like a poodle or more like Maltese - there is no guarantee. If you choose to buy a cross breed you do not know until the dog is an adult what it will be like. You could have two pups from the same parents in the same litter that are unrecognisable as litter mates. That is the way it is if you do not buy a pure bred dog.

I am sorry your new puppy is having issues. Please let us know what the vet said. Yes, maltipoo is not a 'breed' (and they are lovable just the same as a breed) it is a mixture and no there are no standards BUT if you can post a picture I'll look at it. My Jasmine was a peekapoo, I've looked at several maltipoos to adopt recently. Most maltipoos, peekapoos have curly hair when pups so you might not be able to determine anything til she is a little older.

Good thoughts about your baby,

hugs,

Took her to the vet. Wants a stool sample. Tonight I had to rub her tummy to get her to poop. Is there anything you can give a dog to help her out? Also he started her on antibiotics and a cough control pill. Said she possibly has a upper respiratory infection. She is still coughing alot. The Kennel has NEVER called me back. What should I do? I just worry about this baby of mine. Any suggestions appreciated. THANKS ALL

DON'T try and give her any medication while you are following the vet's treatment. The drugs could mix badly and cause worse problems. Perhaps if she has had a lot of diarrhoea there is nothing there for her to "go" with.

Don't know what you can do about the kennel - did she come with any sort of warranty or anything? Doesn't sound like a good place to have bought a pup. Was it a puppy mill? If so you don't sound much chance of getting any positive response. That's what happens when you buy a pup from somewhere like that. Very helpful when they want to take your money but no good at producing good healthy pups and totally uncaring when things go wrong.

cjhays,

Not sure what you are asking in your last post?
"Is there anything you can give a dog to help her out?" To help her poop? Or to stop the cough?

If the kennel is not answering the phone, is it too far away to go pay them a visit? I would to get answers.

Did your vet do blood work? Could be your pup has kennel cough?

Keep us posted.

I suppose it depends as well what you want to know from the kennels - what questions do you want to ask and what answers do you hope to receive? If you want to know if the dog is healthy - the answer is definitely not! I think the best the OP will get (if she gets anywhere with them at all) is an offer to take the pup back.

The breeders that I know make themselves available to new owners indefinitely, even contacting them to make sure everything is ok weeks and months down the line. This kennel/breeder clearly does not have the pups welfare at heart.

You didn't mention the puppy's age. I hope she improves.

Oh no, that sounds terrible. I hope the vet can help you figure out what's wrong with your new pup. And I hope everything turns out okay and she gets better. Keep us posted on her status, and what the vet says!

I would talk to ur vet about what to feed her... the few times my dog has had diarrhea, my vet says no food for 24 hours... and then after that u can try a blend of rice and organic vanilla yogurt. But ask your vet first! Make sure the little guy stays hydrated! Hope he improves quickly! Keep us updated

DId you get her from a kennel or breeder? I picked my guy up off a farm and he was sick for a good 2 months with kennel cough and some virus nad bacterial infection also.....

I guess it's part of getting a puppy from anywhere besides a reputable breeder.... u never know what you'll get.

Still don't know what was really wrong with him but they put him on over 4 antibiotics to cover everything and eventaully he got better.

I gave my guy blue buffalo cuz its sold at most pet stores and i heard its good for them (and for dogs with irritable stomachs).... his poop was horrendous as well when I got him... his nose had some green discharge for a while.....

Just keep a close eye out... kep him warm... vet visits and updates are important...

GOOD LUCK!
