Unhappy Unanswered: Yorkie 10 week old puppy, help me...he pees/eliminates everywhere except pad.

Hello everyone. I hope you guys can help me with my puppy since this is the first time I have one. He is a 2.5 lb Yorkie. His name is Gucci . I got him on 07-07-10 and since day one all he has been doing is peeing and pooping everywhere but on the potty pad. When he does start to pee on the carpet or floor, I immediately take him to his potty pad but unfortunately he does nothing there except sit. I can tell that he gets frustrated with the leash holding him back from sniffing around the kitchen floor or carpet. So as soon as I let him off the leash he starts sniffing around and if I turn my back to him one minute he pees/poops on the floor or carpet. WHAT AM I DOING? Why won't he pee on the potty pad? Any advice would truly make me more hopeful. THANK YOU.

He is far too young to be reliably house trained. A dog does not have the physical and emotional capability to control their functions at 10 weeks. When toilet training is going well at that age it is because of the diligence of the owner, not the intelligence of the dog.

First of all I would say if you only put him on the pad when you see him start to pee you are too late. You need to be watching him and recognise the signs that he is about to go.

To start with you need to clean your floors really thoroughly to remove any odour that the dog can still sense. If you do a google search you will find loads of different inexpensive recipes you can make that will remove the scent.

When you are training your dog you need to take the initiative. It is your responsibility to spot when he needs to go or is likely to go and put him where you want him to be. Rather than holding him on a leash on the pad you might find it would work better if you could construct a pen - some people find it works well in the garden as well - and put him there after every meal, every nap, any time there is a change in his activity, when you see him sniffing the ground and circling - and don't let him go for more than an hour without a toilet break.

Small puppies are like children - if you turn your back on them accidents happen. You have to try and keep your eye on him all the time - make sure he is in the same room as you and if you can't have him with you put him in a confined space where he will be safe.

Toilet training is really hard work and horribly tedious but it is better than constantly scrubbing the carpet with disinfectant LOL!
