Default Unanswered: My female dog was just in heat is she pregnant?

My female dog just got out of heat for the first time and i'm not sure if she is pregnant or not. I also have a male dog that is not fixed, don't worry i am in the process of getting all 3 of my dogs fixed. So what are the first signs of pregnancy? And what are the chances she is and i just didn't see them "in action"?

You need to take her to the vet so they can do an ultra sound...That's really the only way to know for sure early on.

I would think that the chances of them mating are pretty high. If you have not supervised them the whole time of course it will have happened!!! An entire dog will go mad for a bitch in heat - it's instinct. If you weren't watching it's as good as putting them together deliberately.

The problem is that by the time it starts to show it is too late to do anything about it. If she has just completed her first season she is far too young to have puppies. Even though she may be physically able to carry a pregnancy she is still a pup herself and will not have the emotional maturity to be a mum. You need to get her to the vet and he will be able to give her an injection to end the pregnancy if indeed she is pregnant. But you need to get her there as soon as possible.

It is not ideal of course but neither is it good to have a full male and a full female. Regardless of how hard times are you have responsibility for these dogs and need to do what is best. Please get her sorted out now before it is too late and you end up adding to the problem of unwanted puppies.

A bitch will generally not even show until 4 to 6 weeks. Your best bet is to get her in and get her spayed now.

The past few days she has just been laying around, and this is not like her, she is a very hyper dog ALL the time. But i know the best thing is to take her to the vet, so i will be scheduling her an appointment as soon as possible. But any more advice would be great! Thanks everyone.

You need to get her there as soon as possible. If she has conceived every day will count and make the procedure more dangerous.

From what you have said money is obviously a consideration but if she is pregnant her care and that of the puppies will cost a lot more than a vet visit in the next 24/48 hours.

Incidentally, when did her season start?

Getting her spayed now will also be an abortion. This is the safest way to care for your dog. It's possible for her to carry a pregnancy, but there is definitely a risk, and certainly not recommended. I understand tight finances and we've all been there. Most communities have programs to help people with spaying and neutering finances. I would call your local animal shelter and rescue groups to see what is available to you. In most cases, you can get a voucher that will get you a discount at the vet of your choice.

Also, just in case you are tempted to have the puppies to sell, you'd not make much of a profit. We've had a couple of litters of chiweenie puppies and after shots, deworming, emergency vet visits as necessary, we were lucky to break even. Only breeders who can do this on a larger scale can make a real profit.

I hope this helps you.

Have you taken her to a vet and if so why not?
