Unanswered: Question about a stubborn dog
Hi,
I've been volunteering as a dog walker at a shelter for a couple of months now, and to be honest I've had limited experience with dogs before. So far it's going pretty good, but there's one dog that doesn't seem to want to go on a walk with me. She's a 2 year old pitbull terrier, and is a very playful and good looking dog, but at best she'll go with me a couple of streets before she starts pulling back to the shelter. No matter what I try, she just lies down on the ground and doesn't move a muscle (unless I start taking her back). They told she was pretty stubborn in general, but I hear she does walk with some other people.
I don't really bring treats along with me, as the other dogs walk just fine without them, but I guess I have no choice when it comes to this dog? Anyone know of any other tips that could help? I know it's probably hard to say, but any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

i know this isnt probably what u want to hear..but i think what ur doing is about all u can do.. Just keep trying, make sure u make a huge deal when she is walking good. Bring treats that will help. Reward, reward, reward. and just be patient.
I volunteer at the humane society where i live and we have a few dogs like that. Do u know where this dog came from, her past? Maybe she was abused and the outside world is scary to her. She just needs confidence, but keep working on it. A dog that wont walk on a lease is a lot less likely to get adopted. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

yeah, from what I hear she was adopted as a pup, but then her owners wanted to have her euthanized because they couldn't deal with her. So the shelter rescued her again. Which is crazy. She doesn't seem dangerous at all, she very much enjoys the company of people, the only thing is she's very reluctant to walk far from the shelter.

MAybe there is is someone out there that wants to adopt a dog that doesn't like to go on walks. Buster hated walks when I first got him, but he loves them now after I walked him to McDonald's a few times and wlked him over to see Katie (his lab friend down the street). It helps to have a good destination when walking a stubborn doggie.

that would be me. I do not take my dogs on walks, why when I have a large fenced yard with everything they need for exercise and play. The concept of walking a dog is not just exercise but socializing so if the dog were to go to a home where there is a fenced play area and another dog, the walking issue is no longer an issue. I can see me now with 28 leashes in hand. I might as well get a sled for them to all pull.

Different strokes for different folks. Not everyone's going to like you and dogs are the same way. You can be the world's greatest dog person, but there're still going to be some that you just cannot connect with. Dogs are great like that. They each have their own personalities. They wouldn't make as great of pets if they didn't

lol, well the treats got her to walk a further half a street more this time. It is curious, because she seems so excited at the start of the walk, she doesn't bark or growl, she lets you pet her...but when we reach a certain distance from the shelter, she just lies down and that's it. Won't move for anything in the world unless you start bringing her back.
I guess maybe because of bad experience she doesn't want to go anywhere far with someone she doesn't trust completely.
