Cool Answered: UTI won't go away

Poor Vinnie - had the vet run another Pee test - he still has crystals and bacteria in his stool - so it's another round of meds for him. She's gonna switch him to something else this time.

Anyone ever experience this where the UTI hasn't gone away with first dose of meds???? She had him on them for 10 days and I brought the sample today - so he had 2 pills left in this dose.

He only had a UTI when we first got him and it went away with the first round of meds.

BUT - he has stopped peeing in the house so that's great - we thought he was over the UTI because he did stop but that is not the case.

Keep your fingers crossed the round does it!!!!

This isn't unheard of, especially if your dog has had antibiotic regimens in the past. Be sure to use all of the antibiotic your vet prescribed.

If it doesn't go away with repeated treatment, there's a really good chance that there's a foreign body in the UT that his body, even with the help of antibiotics, simply cannot remedy on its own. This will require surgery to correct. Since your vet is already on the case, he/she will know this and take the progressive steps in diagnosing it (second round of antibiotics, further testing, etc.).

I sincerely hope your dog gets relief soon! Always finish the antibiotics and get them to drink water. Every time I'm given advice about those terrible infections I'm told water is key. I'm praying my dog doesn't have to deal with one. My newly adopted female pug has only been peeing once a day for the past week, is this a sign of UTI in dogs? When and how did you find out yours had one?

My fingers are crossed for your dog!!!

Harley, not peeing isn't so much a sign of UTI as it is of dehydration. Check the nape of the neck by grabbing it as if you were picking up a pup. If a fold stays even for a tiny moment, he may be dehydrated. Also, check the gums for dryness and stickyness. If they are dry and/or sticky, he is probably dehydrated. Get to a vet or force pedialyte if this is the case.

If he's not dehydrated and he's drinking plenty of water, then pay attention to how much he expels when he does go. Maybe he simply has a large bladder. If he only expels a little though, I'd definitely check his temperature and urine for crystals.

For dehydration I should've said get to a vet AND force pedialyte. Vet ASAP. If that cannot happen for several hours (not the best choice) then it'd be a good idea to get some pedialyte in him via an oral syringe. I've even used an infant's nasal aspirator in a pinch.

Glad to hear Vinnie is better. More and more I am hearing of UTI's that are resistant to antibiotics.

My vet now does a urine culture for every animal that they suspect of having a UTI, selecting the most appropriate antibiotic based on results. She now treats for 3 weeks and re-cultures 2 weeks after that. There are a couple of people I know whose dogs are on medication for resistant UTI's that costs >$1000 (!)

Yay for Vinnie!!! Harley is doing great, much better with her pottying. I think she wasn't getting enough water.

UTIs are evil, no dog deserves to get them. I worry about Harley getting one because she can't tell me what is wrong, I just have to wait until I see her hurting. I really am happy your Vinnie is better.

Default uti wont go away

Hi. What type of diet are you feeding your dog? Supermarket food for dogs is not the best and does not have the correct pH and affects the urinary system and you get reoccuring infections.
Try feeding a premium diet from petshops or vet clinics.
