Unanswered: picking up after your dog, on walks
Just curious, I got this from my sister and think it is a great idea and do it as well.
Does anyone else hold the bag open under their dogs butt and catch the poop as it drops. I really prefer this to picking it up with the bag, also if it is a little softer I avoid the problem of getting it all out of the grass or whatever. I think I have about a 95% success rate in getting the bag under in time.

Guess a lot depends on the size of your dog LOL! My Jack Russell is too low to the ground for me to even attempt it. Plus an added advantage of feeding dry food (kibble) and raw bones is the firm poop it produces.

I've never tried that. I also have a little Jack and a Border Collie/Spaniel X. I doubt either one of them would appreciate me interrupting them with a bag under their butts. I do treat myself to biodegradable vanilla scented poop bags though so, once it is picked up and knotted, it doesn't smell.

I have one area of the yard that I trained all of my dogs to go in. I make sure they go poo before we go on a walk. But I carry some bags on the rare occasion that they poo while on a walk. If they act like they have to go, I give a leash correction and make them hold it until they get home. We still have accidents sometimes, but it's working.

Yeah I don't think my dogs would enjoy me getting in their business while they're doing their business. It seems kind of unnecessary to me! but hey, whatever works for you! and as long as you're picking it up that's all that matters. I hate when people don't!

The other morning I actually stopped a woman who had left her dog's mess on the pavement and pointed it out! She had poo bags attached to her dog's collar but apparently hadn't noticed him stop and poo right on the doorstep of my neighbour's house! My husband told me I had been very foolish and she could have been most unpleasant but I couldn't bear to think of my neighbour opening her door and landing in it!

I'd do the same thing! I feel so bad that on the off chance one of my dog goes twice and I run out of bags, I make sure when I get home to grab one and go back to pick it up. It's just common courtesy!

I've been known to put my daughter's lunch in the bin so that I can use the bag to clean up after the dog. Then I've taken her to school and gone back again before lunch time with a fresh sandwich! It really bugs me and, because I have three dogs, I always worry that any poo on the pavement in our road will be blamed on one of them.

I don't think that either of my dogs would like that, but it's a great tip for anyone that is just starting out with a new puppy! I think it is probably better to train them doing that than trying to start it with an older dog.

Not necessarily true. My sister started with an 8 year old rescue greyhound. Mine is 8 months and I have only been doing it for roughly the last month. Timing is everything and I had to get the cues down and have the bag ready.

I planted cactus out front in my flower beds because the guy down the street lets his dog poop in my flowerbeds. I haven't seen dog poop in my flower beds since I planted the cactus. It doesn't matter how you pick up your dogs poop. Do whatever works for you. Just make sure you pick it.

Picking up poop
Regardless of what method you use, it is your responsibility as a dog parent to clean up after your pet. Nothing makes me angrier than to see someone allow their dog todefecate on the sidewalk or someone's lawn and just walk away. The way I handle it is to walk up to the individual and say, "I noticed your dog just pooped. I guess you forgot to bring a bag." I hand the offending human a bag and they are too embarassed not to pick it up!

Its so disgusting and just rude!! I usually pick it us when my dog goes out to go poo just bc i cant stand it but it makes me mad bc its not my dog.

I'd be having a talk with the owner of the mastiff. Your property should not be any dogs personal bathroom except for your own!

ive been thinking about talking to the owners.. i'm just worried its going to cause a problem. I dont really know this women.. she just lives next door. Plus my dog is scared to death of this dog, we're not really sure why bc usually my dog likes everyone... the mastiff isnt neutered so maybe that has something to do with it. Most of the dogs my dog is around are fixed. Anyways i guess i just need to just suck it up and talk to the mastiff owner about it... Thanks!!

Are there not bylaws in your community about picking up? The bylaws here are worded to make it illegal to let your dog go on public or private property, and goes on to say that it must be picked up!!

We have saint bernards and Sammie went over to our neighbors and took a dump. I was mortified. I ran over and hollared at her to get back in the yard and then went and got a bag and picked it up. I haven't had an incidence like this since then. Our next door neighbor keeps his lawn looking like a golf course. I was so hoping he wouldn't be upset. He laughed about it and said it's just exta furtilizer.

Angiesample: Perhaps if the dog operates on a schedule, you could arrange to be outside watering his preferred spot. It wouldn't be your fault if he got a little wet.

ahhh. aw well as much as i love my dog, this sounds like too much work for me. first of all, i would have to bend over as my dog is pretty low to the ground and that would be hard on my back. second of all, i like to give my dog some space to do his business.. just like he doesn't want me around him when he's eating, i'm sure he doesn't want me around him while he's doing his business. i'm perfectly fine with waiting for him to finish up his biz, then picking it up. plus, standing there all crouched over like that with people looking at me would make me feel awkward/weird. but hey, to each his or her own!
