Has he ever got in trouble for giving a warning bark when there are strangers coming? If so, he might resort to the next best thing he can think of, growling. He doesn't growl after they enter the room, right? Is he friendly with other people after he meets them? Rather than correct him for it, maybe you can give your visitors some treats as soon as you open the door. They can give them to your dog. If it happens often enough, he might think of having visitors as a good thing. Try having someone come over every day and give him treats as soon as they walk in the door. You can also have the person come in and sit down for 5 minutes and have them walk out the door and come back in to give more treats so the dog can make the connection faster. Maybe he thinks of the visitor as a bad thing because he gets in trouble when a visitor comes over. He might not associate his growling as the thing he is getting in trouble for. Whatever he is thinking at the moment is what he thinks he getting corrected for.
