Default Unanswered: Concern about dog wieght ...

Hello Everyone,

The other night my boyfriend and I adopted/resuced a 10 month old male Rottweiler/German Shepard cross. As soon as we got him in the house it was very obvious that he had not been cared for well at all, he is very skinny (weighing only 57lbs we're guessing he should be closer to 70 + lbs), and he seems to stay away from the food and water we have out.

Since he's been home he has been sick a couple times and he hasn't pooped at all, and he's only peed a very little bit. I realize that the drive home could be a small cause of this but I am concerned nonetheless. If anyone has any options or ideas to help us with him that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The first thing would be to get him checked over by a vet. He could have worms or a virus. I wouldn't be overly worried about the food - he might take a while to feel comfortable eating - but he does need to drink. Will he lick water from your fingers? How long have you had him exactly? He could also have an internal blockage. He needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible.

I agree he should be seen by a vet. I am giving you a link that may not especially sound like it could be the problem. I thought of this though when I read your post--esp. the weight issue. Will not hurt for you to read it and mention the possibility if you see the vet---Which I hope you will do! German Shepherds can have a lot of issues---a tendency of not being able to get proper nutrition from their food. I am giving you a couple of links here. Here is the 1st one I mentioned: Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency in Dogs - Whole Dog Journal Article
