Default Answered: Maximum 2 dogs

I just read something online that in the city nearest to me there's some law that states you can only have 2 dogs per household.

I've never heard of such a terrible thing, have you?

Even here in Australia its common practice in metropolis that there is a 2 dog limit. In saying that families in the city are allowed more, but have to apply for a kennel licence for over 2, and the local council will give the direct neighbours the opportunity to dispute the issue of a licence for more than 2. (i think the maximum is 5)

I personally think its fair enough in the city, having a dog as a pet is not everyones thing, and with smaller yards in the city and inner suburbs, neighbours who choose not to have a dog for what ever reason, should not have to put up with the noise etc multiple dogs may cause.

In rural areas though, the rules on the number of dogs on a property are a little more relaxed.

Actually this is very common, limiting pets per household. There is though what most cities offer to those that exceed the limit, a kennel license. In my area, the kennel license affords those that exceed 5 dogs to allowance to have so long as the yard space is comparable for them. Small yard puts limits on the size of the breed or dogs. I personally live in what is called an unincorporated area of the county where we are not in any official city limits. Plus I live on a farm. Depending on the city or township the kennel fee varies but nearly is always a yearly fee.

Ok, but you are saying the max is 5 dogs which seems to be a lot more normal number than 2. Not that I plan to get more than one (for now), but if I had the money & space, I wouldn't want to be told how many dogs I could have.

Things have changed soooo much in the last 20 years since I had a dog or was a child & we had dogs.

Our town has 2 large dog (over 35 lbs) and 5 small dog (under 35 lbs). I have never heard of this law being enforced. We have 3 saint bernards and the people 2 doors down have 15 tiny yappy dogs. I think you're fine as long as you aren't hoarding animals. i think that's mainly why some of those laws are in place.

What I am saying is that it varies from state to state and within the state as to the number one can have.
