Default Unanswered: Pet Insurance

So does everyone get pet insurance?

Which ones are the best ones?
What do I need to look out for?
Is it worth it since they don't seem to cover basics?

Thanks

Michelle

I had insurance through Banfield but I dropped it because I usually needed it after hours. I just couldn't train my pets to only get sick or injured between the hours of 10am and 5pm. I couldn't find insurance with comparable rates, so I don't have any now.

I do have a new vet that has much lower rates, is very good, and my pets like her. If they needed surgery I couldn't afford, I would put them down. Some would call me inhumane, but I have the humans in my family to think of too. Don't get me wrong, it would kill me to do it.

Marc, before you would consider this action you would at least attempt other options such as the many sites that offer assistance in covering vet bills due to financial concerns. Or if nothing else, surrender the dogs to those who can afford and are willing to take on situations such as this. I have taken in many dogs over the years where they needed surgery and the owner could not afford it.

I said, "surgery I could not afford." I never said I couldn't afford surgery. For example, I've heard of people spending $1000s on continuous cancer treatments, MRIs, experimental treatments, exploratories, etc. Those are the types I'm not willing to shell out for.

I'd certainly surrender my dog to someone willing to pay for this, but I'd imagine that someone willing to pay $1000s would 1) rather save many dogs with much lower vet bills and 2) not wish that my dog stayed in agony as I tried to track them down.

sorry, I misunderstood the surgery as opposed to treatment. Generally surgery if the solution than yes it is feasibly worth it but to go through long term treatment with no real end in sight especially if the dog is suffering, than the humane thing to do would be to euthanize.

I actually just started a savings account for my dog when we first got her and i put some in each month. It adds up fast and it nice to have that piece of mind.

I agree. All of the pocket change we have saved over the years has come in handy for vet bills. Some banks are even really cool and will allow you put your dog's name on the account along with yours.

Pet insurance is now a very common and used largely by many pet lovers but taking it is an individual decision. When looking for pet insurance, online searching can be very helpful. Most companies have websites through which you can complete your research and compare online quotes for better deal. After all, it covers your pet from illness, injury or emergencies as well as protects you financially from an unforeseen situation. It’s worthy if you pick the perfect insurance plan to protect your pet.
