Exclamation Answered: Dog at friend's houses

Everytime I take my dog to a friend's home she does something bad. She popped three balls at one house (kid's balls). Yesterday she dug three holes and pulled up a budding lemon tree. How do I make her behave at other's houses? Any tips or things to try? I am open to anything. It's getting to the point where our friends do not want her over.

How much training do u do with ur dog? What commands does she know?

At this point i would be doing 2-3, 10 min sessions of training a day. Start with the basics and go from there. sit, stay, come, heel, stop, leave it, give it, no dig, down... u choose the specifics. I would also sign u and ur dog up for some obedience classes. They are fun and will allow u and ur dog to bond.

Exercise is so important. u have a doberman u said in ur previous post? I would take her on AT LEAST a 45 min fast pace walk before going to ur friends house. In fact u should be taking ur dog on several walks a day to release some of the energy.

Until u can trust ur dog u really need to be able to watch the dog at all times when u are at a friends house.. if u arent able to than leash him up so she will stay with u. Finally dont forget its a dog shes not going to be perfect, just make sure ur friends know u are working with ur dog and they should understand.

Also dobermans love to have a job. See what kind of activities are in ur area for u and ur dog to do. I just recently started with a organization in my area for a volunteer k9 unit.. it is so much fun we get to meet so many other dogs and it is really bringing my dog and i together, its really helping her focus and it makes her feel so important when she sniffs out the ppl who are pretending to need rescued.

We also do agility 5 times a month. It is incredible my dog has done so well, except for the tunnel she scared of that tunnel..lol.

Well, good luck!

Keep her under control! I wouldn't be happy if someone brought their dog to my house and it wrecked my garden or my kids' toys. She needs to be taught what she can do and where and if you can't control her by calling her away from things before she causes damage keep her on a leash or leave her at home. If I take my dog with me to somewhere there will be children playing ball or people are eating I keep him on the lead. He still has fun but he doesn't trouble anyone.

You need to practise obedience at home and test her out in small ways away from home but don't expect too much too soon. You have to train her. Perhaps teach her a command to make her focus on you and get her to do that in all sorts of places and circumstances, not just in your home, and if when you are out she ignores you put the leash on before she causes any upset.

Thank you so much for the pointers. This is my first dog so I really appreciate you helping. I will be trying the things you have mentioned. We have not tried keeping her on a leash unless we walk her. I will do that. She is a Doberman and does know how to sit, stay, laydown, jump up, down. She catches on quickly. Thanks again for all of your help. I will keep everyone updated on the progress .

Dobermans are very intelligent dogs. If you do not keep them busy they will find fiind something to keep themselves busy, and it's normally what you wouldn't him to do. This dog needs to walk several miles a day and needs to learn things that will keep his mind engaged for a while. The best time to train your dobe to do new tricks is after a walk. Maybe you can teach him to go get a Pepsi out of the fridge for you.
